10 weird and viral moments from Emmys 2024: From 'evil gays' speech to a green goblin
Emmys 2024: 10 weird and viral moments from the award ceremony
The 75th Annual Emmy Awards, which recognized milestones in prime time television from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, were held a little later than usual this year due to the Hollywood strike, causing them to be postponed from last autumn to early 2024. The Monday, January 15, Emmy Awards were not exceptions to the rule that there are excellent, horrible, and extremely awkward moments. The Fox event this year—hosted by Anthony Anderson—had a few surprises, shocks, and unscripted moments.
Anthony Anderson's mother
Anthony Anderson poked fun at his mother Doris Bowman in his introductory speech, referring to her as the "Emmys Playoff mama" and asking guests to show civility while highlighting her West Side Chicago upbringing and her propensity for "throwing hands." Although the humorous part initially connected with the audience, winners like Jeremy Allen White and Jennifer Coolidge found it offensive. The infamous play-off music from the awards show would be replaced with Bowman's alerts when winners' acceptance speeches went beyond the allocated time. Bowman performed her job so expertly that the show concluded precisely when it was meant to.
Elton John finally won the EGOT but didn't turn up to receive it
Elton John finally won the rare EGOT (the trophy given to the recipient of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award) for his concert special 'Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium'. But he did not even turn up to accept the honor in person. Despite the enormous success, Elton was forced to miss the event in Los Angeles due to a recent knee surgery, being unable to claim the statuette, per Daily Mail. He did, however, release a written statement after winning.
Pedro Pascal says Kieran Culkin 'beat the s**t out of me'
Pedro Pascal couldn't resist the chance to tease 'Succession' star Kieran Culkin before presenting the 75th Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama. As he explained why his left arm was in a sling, Pascal, 48, quipped that Culkin, 41, was to be blamed for his injuries. Pascal remarked, "A lot of people have been asking about my arm; it's actually my shoulder. And I think tonight is a perfect time to tell everyone that Kieran Culkin beat the s**t out of me." Culkin responded by looking off into space and then burst out laughing, per Daily Mail.
Jennifer Coolidge thanks all 'evil gays' for Emmys win
During her humorous acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards on January 15, Jennifer Coolidge thanked "all the evil gays" who tried to kill her in 'The White Lotus'. The actress joked that she didn't "have the strength" to hold the Emmy and placed it on the ground during her acceptance speech. In addition, Jennifer reminded the crowd that she "got the hook last year" when her acceptance speech for 'The White Lotus' went on for too long. The audience erupted in cheers when Jennifer continued, "I want to thank all the evil gays," realizing that time was running short.
Christina Applegate gets standing ovation
The first presenter of the evening, Christina Applegate, battled multiple sclerosis and entered the stage on a cane. Host Anthony Anderson held her arm. The 'Dead to Me' actress began to cry as she approached the stage, and the entire crowd applauded her. Christina then quipped, "You're totally shaming me and my disability by standing up." She further joked, "Body not by Ozempic," garnering additional laughter.
Niecy Nash-Betts' 'I want to thank me' speech
Niecy Nash's acceptance of the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her performance in 'Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' was another poignant moment. In an impassioned statement, the 53-year-old actress accepted the award "on behalf of every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard." As she stepped onto the stage, she yelled, "I'm a winner, baby!" She went to thank herself by saying, "I want to thank me. For believing in me and doing what they said I could not do. I want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, go, girl, with you bad self. You did that."
Aubrey Plaza's needle-point dress
Among the famous individuals in attendance was comedian and actor Aubrey Plaza, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Harper Spiller in 'White Lotus'. She was defeated, though, by co-star Jennifer Coolidge. Although Aubrey did not win, her red carpet appearance made headlines and inspired a ton of memes that went viral. The 39-year-old caught eyes with her yellow Loewe dress, which included a separate square-cut top fastened with a huge sewing needle.
A 'green goblin' at the Emmys
Interestingly, a 'green goblin' stole the show during the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. 'RuPaul's Drag Race' cast member Princess Poppy wore some unique red carpet outfits as the show continued to dominate the awards ceremony. Princess Poppy, self-described as a 'troll-slash-hag', chose to dress as a wart-covered goblin, while her fellow drag queens went all out for the event. The drag queen had face prosthetics fitted to give her a huge nose, pointed ears, and green paint on her entire body. She even had extra-long fingernails on her hands and was seen carrying a handbag with googly eyes and punk doll heads on it.
Matty Matheson gets a kiss
Real-life chef and star Matty Matheson took the stage after 'The Bear' won one of the greatest awards of the evening—Outstanding Comedy Series. He began his speech, "I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole," as costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach gave him a firm kiss on the lips. He acknowledged the entire cast and crew and continued, praising them for their ability to "make people feel good or filled with anxiety or triggered," which elicited a great deal of laughter from the crowd.
'In Memoriam' segment features Matthew Perry but not Jerry Springer
During its 'In Memoriam' segment, the 2024 Emmys paid specific honor to the late actor Matthew Perry of 'Friends', but excluded late talk show host Jerry Springer. Jerry Springer's representative described his omission from the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards' 'In Memoriam' segment as "very sad". 'The Jerry Springer Show' host, who died in April 2023 at 79, was one of the many famous figures whose names were left out of the solemn part of the award ceremony. "Thank you for remembering him, he deserves to be remembered!" the representative told Radar Online on Tuesday, January 16.
