11 celebrities who have hosted the Golden Globes: From Ricky Gervais to Amy Poehler and Tina Fey
The 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards has an official host. Comedian Nikki Glaser bagged the opportunity to host the award show scheduled to be held on January 5, 2025. Notably, Golden Globes were conducted without a host for over 50 years until 1995, when the Hollywood Foreign Press started the award show in 1944. Expressing her joy for being selected, Glaser said in a press release statement, as per Variety, "It's one of my favorite nights of television, and now I get a front-row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage), adding it was "exciting, yet challenging." Here are 11 celebrities who have hosted the Golden Globes until 2024.
1. Ricky Gervais
Comedian Ricky Gervais has had the opportunity to host the Golden Globes five times. He entertained the audience back to back for three years, from 2010 to 2012. Notably, the 2010 event was the second time the award show had a host, and it was the first one to be televised. "Just looking at all the faces here reminds me of some of the great work that's been done this year … by cosmetic surgeons. You all look great," he said in his first stint. 'The Office' actor returned to the award stage in 2016. The 2020 Golden Globes was his latest appearance. "Let's have a laugh — at your expense," he said on stage. The hosting also turned controversial for Gervais' joke about Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking about his show 'AfterLife', he remarked, "In the end, he didn't kill himself. Just like Jeffrey Epstein. Sorry, I know he's your friend."
2. Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were the Golden Globes host four times. Jointly hosting the show from 2013 to 2015 and then in 2021, they succeeded in making the audience laugh. In 2021 she said, "Now, Tina and I are hosting from two different cities tonight but the technology is so great you'll never be able to tell a difference," as they hosted from New York City and Los Angeles.
3. Tina Fey
Tina Fey was a constant presence alongside Amy Poehler, bringing their long friendship onto the Golden Globes stage from 2013 to 2015 and then in 2021. In 2015, they jointly mocked George Clooney by listing the achievements of his wife, Amal Clooney; in 2013, she trolled her predecessor, saying, "Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight because he is no longer technically in show business.'
4. Jo Koy
Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globes earlier this year. "I've stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special," the comedian said at the time. "I'm so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year. This is the moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!” However, he drew ire over inappropriate quips on his writing team and 'Barbenheimer'. "Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and Barbie is about a plastic doll with big b**bies," he said in a sexist tone.
5. Jerrod Carmichael
Stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael was offered the chance to host the 2023 Golden Globes, and he roasted the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for why he was selected. "I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I'm Black," he said to the audience. The 'On the Count of Three' movie director added, "The Golden Globe Awards did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which, I won't say they were a racist organization, but they didn't have a single Black member until George Floyd died." Carmichael noted that the HFPA did not have a Black host for 79 years.
6. Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh
The 2019 Golden Globes Awards ceremony witnessed an unexpected duo as hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Samberg's remarks were filled with punchlines, while Oh shared some memorable moments. "If I could take a moment here in all honesty," Oh said, appreciating the entertainment industry's strides in representation, after her co-host mentioned nominees like 'Crazy Rich Asians', 'BlacKkKlansman,' and 'Black Panther' as per Entertainment Weekly. She added that despite her initial fear of being on stage, she accepted to host the event because she wanted to witness and be part of this moment of change.
7. Seth Meyers
The 75th Golden Globes had a late-night show touch to captivate the audience when Seth Meyers entered the stage. However, the numerous tributes only left the comedian with less screen time. Though the 2018 awards season turned out to be incredible, many were disappointed for not getting to see Meyers more on stage.
8. Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Fallon landed the gig in 2017 when he hosted the 74th Golden Globes Awards. To the late-night show host's misfortune, the teleprompter failed during his opening monologue. However, Fallon handled it like an expert and had everyone laughing.
9. John Larroquette
Actors John Larroquette and Janine Turner were the first hosts of the Golden Globes Awards. In 1995, they co-hosted the 52nd annual ceremony. At the time he was selected for the gig, Larroquette was starring in 'The John Larroquette Show'.
10. Janine Turner
Janine Turner is another prominent celebrity who created history by being the first co-host and the first female to host the Golden Globes Awards in 1995. When she landed the opportunity to jointly host the event with John Larroquette, she was acting in ' Northern Exposure'. After 1995, the ceremony went hostless till 2010.
