30-gallon fuel spill contaminates National Mall ahead of America 250
WASHINGTON, DC: A fuel spill linked to preparations for America's 250th birthday celebration is drawing scrutiny not simply because more than 30 gallons of fuel leaked near the National Mall but because the contamination reportedly reached underground infrastructure serving one of the country's most recognizable public spaces.
According to reports, the fuel seeped into cisterns connected to irrigation systems that help maintain large portions of the National Mall.
The bigger issue is where the fuel ended up
Construction sites and large-scale event preparations routinely deal with spills, equipment failures, and other operational problems.
What makes this incident different is that the fuel did not remain confined to the surface.
The fuel from commercial generators at the May 17 event seeped into underground cisterns that collect rainwater to irrigate the Mall, people told NBC.
Four of the cisterns, which hold up to 250,000 gallons, are under the National Mall. The people familiar with the matter said efforts to clean up the spill are underway.
The incident has triggered cleanup efforts and raised new questions about what exactly happened, how extensive the contamination may be, and whether the public is receiving a complete explanation.
The spill occurred near preparations for the Freedom 250 celebration, one of the signature events planned as part of the nation's semiquincentennial festivities.

Competing explanations emerge
Representatives from Freedom 250 said the incident was the result of “vandalism.”
“Following the Freedom 250 team’s installation of temporary lighting on the National Mall, our equipment has been repeatedly targeted by vandals. The recent fuel leak was the direct result of that tampering,” Rachel Reisner, spokeswoman for Freedom 250, said in a statement provided to NBC News.
“Upon discovering damage to a generator fuel line, Freedom 250 and our vendors mobilized within minutes, coordinated an immediate cleanup response, and fully remediated the site in close partnership with the National Park Service,” Reisner said.

“We take our responsibility as stewards of the National Mall seriously and are working closely with the appropriate law enforcement authorities regarding these acts of vandalism.”
Freedom 250 organizers have suggested vandalism was responsible for the spill, framing the incident as an intentional act rather than an accident.
However, NBC News reported that multiple sources familiar with the matter disputed that explanation, creating a gap between the public narrative offered by organizers and information emerging from other accounts.
Another of the people familiar with the matter said the spill adds to doubt about the future of the grass on the National Mall, which was already vulnerable given the number of high-foot-traffic events planned there over the coming weeks.
They include celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary, such as a Great American State Fair and a Fourth of July Salute to America, as well as an IndyCar race planned for August.
As cleanup efforts continue, the focus is likely to remain on two unresolved issues: how serious the impact on the Mall's underground systems actually is, and whether investigators ultimately confirm the vandalism explanation or arrive at a different conclusion.
