8 stars who recreated iconic looks at 2024 VMAs: From 'Clueless' Taylor Swift to Halsey's vintage Versace
In an era of fast fashion and exclusivity of attires, the 2024 Video Music Awards came as a breath of fresh air for its unique take on contemporary fashion. Not only did many stars recreate iconic looks while attending the VMAs, but several legendary dresses were also repeated by the attending celebrities. Scroll ahead to check out how the stars reimagined and repeated certain iconic moments to pull off their VMA fashion.
1. Taylor Swift channeled her inner Alicia Silverstone in a plaid dress
After turning heads for the Kansas City Chiefs' NFL opener last week, Taylor Swift went for another jaw-dropping look for her appearance on the VMA red carpet. For the outing, Swift chose a yellow-and-green plaid ensemble that evoked Alicia Silverstone's iconic character Cher Horowitz from her 1995 film 'Clueless'. During a scene in the romantic comedy, Silverstone wore a Dolce & Gabbana look in a plaid set-in skirt and jacket in matching colors.
2. Sabrina Carpenter looked glamorous in Madonna’s white gown from 1991
Sabrina Carpenter paid tribute to the musical maestro Madonna as she repeated the Queen of Pop's iconic white plunging gown from her 1991 Academy Awards appearance. Carpenter accessorized the vintage Bob Mackie column gown with a sleek diamond necklace and styled her blonde hair like Madonna's curls.
3. Addison Rae recreated Madonna’s cone bra look
Madonna not only inspired Sabrina Carpenter but also singer Addison Rae. While Rae did not wear a dress previously worn by Madonna, her ensemble definitely had a touch of inspiration from the 'Popular' hitmaker. Rae appeared in a custom Miss Claire Sullivan look featuring a white cone bustier top, high-waisted bottoms, and a tulle skirt. Ring a bell? Well her look was inspired by Madonna's Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra that she famously wore on her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990. Speaking to Vogue on the red carpet, Rae admitted about her look, "A lot of Russ Meyer for the ['Diet Pepsi'] music video, Bruce Conner Breakaway, Madonna — I wore a cone bra. That’s part of the inspiration for tonight, but a little bit of ‘Diet Pepsi’ in there and a little bit Madonna."
4. GloRilla honored Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes’ hair from 2000
While most stars recreated vintage looks based on clothes, GloRilla went a tad more specific as she paid tribute to late TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes by recreating her iconic hairstyle from the 2000 Soul Train Awards. GloRilla wore her black hair in dramatic circles and braids like her style inspiration.
5. Halsey looked iconic in Elizabeth Hurley's red dress
Halsey stunned in red at the VMAs as she wore a Gianni Versace previously worn by actress and model Elizabeth Hurley in 1996 during the Versace Boutique Grand Opening Party in NYC. Halsey gushed about the dress while speaking to Vogue, "I cannot believe I'm wearing it! Gianni designed it for Elizabeth Hurley to celebrate the opening of their new boutique, and she dropped it off at a dry cleaner's. She never picked it up. They found it. It was auctioned. No one's worn it since. I'm wearing it. I literally feel like I could faint. I'm so excited about it."
6. Megan Thee Stallion recreated Britney Spears’ snake look
It might seem like a deja vu moment for many as host Megan Thee Stallion recreated Britney Spears' iconic 2001 VMAs performance on 'I'm a Slave 4 U' - complete with an embellished green cutout bra, bedazzled shorts with fabric adornment and a giant yellow snake. Spears' look was previously created by designers Kurt and Bart, per Buzz Feed.
7. Tate McCrae also channeled her inner Britney Spears
Britney Spears' 2001 VMAs appearance inspired not one - but two red carpet looks for the 2024 VMAs. This time, Tate McCrae paid a subtle homage to the 'Toxic' singer's red carpet look created by Dolce & Gabbana. McCrae wore a similar lace mini dress with black lingerie underneath and her custom outfit was created by Roberto Cavalli.
8. Megan Thee Stallion paid tribute to US gymnastics team’s leotard
Megan Thee Stallion also did not forget to pay tribute to the immensely successful US Olympic gymnastics team. The VMAs host appeared on stage in a one-shouldered red, white, and blue leotard, embellished with sequin stars, reminiscent of Simone Biles' team's Paris Olympics outfit. Team USA's outfit was originally designed by GK Elite.
