8 things that show shady side of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds: From on-set feuds to plantation wedding
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are the darlings of Hollywood - but that doesn't guarantee them to be beyond reproach. The couple, who ruled the summer box office with their double release, Reynolds' 'Deadpool and Wolverine' and Lively's 'It Ends With Us', have reportedly shown some problematic behaviors over the past. Here, we are unpacking eight such instances which can't be overlooked.
1. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds met when they were in separate relationships
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds may now be one of the most loved couples in Hollywood, but the couple's romantic life began on a controversial note. They first met on the set of 'Green Lantern' in 2010. During that time, both of them were with different partners - while Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson, Lively was dating her 'Gossip Girl' co-star Penn Badgley. Talking about their firework chemistry even when they were with other people, Reynolds shared in an interview with SiriusXM's Entertainment Weekly Radio in 2016, "It was funny because for about a year after 'Green Lantern' had come and gone and all that stuff, we were both single," before adding, "We went on a double date with [other people] and that was the most awkward date from their perspective probably because we were just like fireworks coming across."
2. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' wedding venue sparked intense backlash
Not only did Reynolds and Lively's courtship raise eyebrows but their wedding venue also led to some controversies. After a year of a whirlwind romance, the pair tied the knot in a secret ceremony at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina on September 9, 2012. When they published photos of the ceremony, some eagle-eyed fans noted the plantation's tie with the chilling history of slave ownership. However, by 2020, the couple owned up to their gaffe and called their venue choice "a giant f*****g mistake." Acknowledging the past, Reynolds shared in an interview, "It's impossible to reconcile. What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy," as per Distractify.
3. Ryan Reynolds was allegedly jealous of Scarlett Johansson's success
When Reynolds' marriage with the 'Black Widow' actress crumbled, claims surfaced that the 'Deadpool' actor was jealous of his then-wife Scarlett Johansson's success. A source told the Daily Mail, that the 47-year-old actor could get controlling in his relationship. They added, "He's more traditional and she's more independent." Per Nicki Swift, even the Marvel star suggested in an interview that their marriage could not sustain the pressure of their rising careers in Hollywood. Johansson shared in an interview with Cosmopolitan in 2016, "There has to be a real understanding of how you share your time, especially when two people's careers are going at the same rate. Or even if one person is more successful than the other, that also proves challenging. There may be a competitive thing."
4. Blake Lively has been accused of on-set diva behavior
Blake Lively has recently been in the news for her alleged on-set feud with her 'It Ends With Us' co-star and director Justin Baldoni. However, Baldoni is apparently not the first of her co-stars who butted heads with the 'Sisterhood of Traveling Pants' actress. In the past, when Lively was playing the role of Serena van der Woodsen in 'Gossip Girl', she was accused of having "diva behavior." Her co-star, Armie Hammer, who later dealt with his own share of controversies, hinted during an appearance at 'Watch What Happens Live After Show' in 2017 that Lively's alleged dislike of him cost him the role. Hammer shared, "Let me just say that was a tough show to film," and added, "It was also like, 'Get him out of here.'"
5. Ryan Reynolds' creative differences with 'Deadpool' director
Blake Lively is not the only one in their marriage who was accused of being involved in an on-set tiff. After the success of 'Deadpool' in 2016, the team began work on the sequel without Tim Miller, the director of the original film. Miller later confirmed that it was creative differences and Reynolds' desire to take full creative control of the film that paved the way for his exit. In 2019, Miller shared in an interview with KCRW, "It became clear that Ryan wanted to be in control of the franchise. You can work that way as a director, quite successfully, but I can't. I don't mind having a debate, but if I can't win, I don't want to play. And I don't think you can negotiate every creative decision, there's too many to make ... So if he decides he wants to control it, then he's going to control it."
6. Blake Lively's questionable behavior with Norwegian journalist
Blake Lively had some unsavory on-air moments that she would probably like to forget. During an interview in 2016, Lively seemingly ignored Norwegian journalist Kjersti Flaa, who uploaded the interview on her YouTube channel. Flaa described the sitdown as "the most uncomfortable interview situation" she has ever experienced. In the clip, Flaa can be seen congratulating Lively on her impending motherhood as she was visibly pregnant with her second child with Ryan Reynolds. However, Lively replied sarcastically, "Congrats on your little bump." Flaa, who feared getting blacklisted following the interview, later shared with TMZ, "I felt, you know, in that situation, a little ashamed at first as I didn't know what happened," before adding, "I didn't know what I said that was so bad that made her ... behave like that. I think it's important to let people know that these things go on sometimes, and maybe it [will] help or prevent it from happening again."
7. Ryan Reynolds and TJ Miller feuded on 'Deadpool' set
Ryan Reynolds apparently feuded with another colleague of his 'Deadpool' films. TJ Miller, who played Weasel in the first two movies of the franchise, shared that a "weird" experience on-set initially acted as the catalyst for the regeneration of their friendship. TJ said to Adam Carolla in his eponymous show in 2022, "As the character, he was, like, horrifically mean to me," and added, "But to me. As if I'm Weasel ... it didn't bother me, but ... I just kind of listened, and thought it was weird, and then I got off stage because they were like, 'Cut?' Everybody was like, 'What the f**k is he doing?'" Nevertheless, he later clarified that following his 2022 interview, Reynolds reached out to him which led to them patching things up.
8. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's 'It Ends With Us' feud
In recent days, Tinseltown has been in strife with the onset of animosity between 'It Ends With Us' stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. According to insiders, the two stars were at cross with each other because of their differing creative ideas. Sources close to Lively have shared with several outlets that Baldoni allegedly made Lively conscious about her body when he inquired about her weight before filming a scene where he had to lift her. Their feud escalated with Lively and the novel's author, Colleen Hoover, unfollowing Baldoni on Instagram. The film's lead pair wasn't even photographed together during the New York premiere of the film. Moreover, Lively faced criticism for her "tone-deaf" promotion of the film where she apparently focused on the aesthetics instead of talking about its serious subject matter of domestic abuse.
