LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans are set to experience another wild ride in 'The Matrix' universe as the fifth installment of this mind-bending franchise is officially in the works, as per reports. However, fans on social media don't seem to be amazed by the news of yet another sequel.

Fans of 'The Matrix' seem to have mixed feelings about the whole deal as it's not even sure if the main star of the movie Neo, played by 'John Wick' actor Keanu Reeves, will be making a comeback for this one.

Recently, Keanu has been keeping himself busy with some pretty diverse roles. He has been caught shedding his action-hero vibes for a dark comedy called 'Outcome', where he's rocking a throwback short-hair look alongside Cameron Diaz.

Recently, Keanu was also been spotted on the set of 'Good Fortune', another upcoming flick. However, eagle-eyed fans couldn't help but notice him limping around with ice packs strapped to his knees.

'The Matrix 5' is under development as per reports

According to Variety, Warner Brothers has confirmed that a fifth 'Matrix' film is currently in the works. This time around, there's a change in the director's chair as Lana and Lily Wachowski won't be returning. Instead, Drew Goddard, known for his work on 'The Martian', will be taking over both writing and directing duties.

He'll also be producing alongside Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles. However, Lana Wachowski, who directed the most recent installment, 'The Matrix: Resurrections' in 2021, will still be involved as an executive producer.

As for the cast, it's still up in the air. While Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have been the pillars of the franchise as Neo and Trinity respectively, it's unclear if they'll be reprising their roles.

Details about the plot of the movie are being kept tightly under wraps, but Jesse Ehrman, the president of production at Warner Bros Motion Pictures, hinted that the new film will expand on the established world while staying true to what fans love about the series.

In a statement to Variety, Ehrman said, “Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters."

He added, "The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

For Goddard, taking on the 'Matrix' universe is a dream come true. He expressed, "It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world."

Since its debut in 1999, 'The Matrix' franchise has been celebrated as a groundbreaking force in the realm of science fiction. It didn't stop at just the original film, though. Three sequels followed: 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Matrix Revolutions' hit theaters in 2003, and 'The Matrix Resurrections' arrived in 2021.

As reported by Variety, while 'Resurrections' marked Lana Wachowski's solo directorial debut and arrived after an 18-year hiatus, it fell short of box-office expectations.

Internet users say Warner Brothers are ruining 'The Matrix' franchise

A user wrote, "After the fourth entry, there's absolutely no need for this. More sequels are just going to tarnish the impact of the original."

Another user wrote, "I guess that fourth movie failing completely wasn’t enough of a lesson for the studio."

A user commented, "They figure they can milk a few more millions out of the franchise after the watchowski's fumbled the fourth movie on purpose."

Another user commented, "Why do they keep trying to ruin a good thing?"

A user stated, "Matrix 4 made $159 million worldwide, with a production budget of $190. I doubt the new movie will do much better."

Another user stated, "The 4th movie sucked. Why didn't they just leave this as a trilogy? Ruining the brand..."
