Adam Devine reveals doctors told him he was ‘dying’ due to complications from childhood accident

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Adam Devine, known for his roles in 'Pitch Perfect' and 'Workaholics,' recently opened up about a frightening medical diagnosis he received within the past year.
The actor, who has been dealing with chronic pain for years, was told by doctors that he had a terminal condition.
However, he later discovered that his symptoms were likely linked to a childhood accident where he was struck by a cement truck, breaking nearly every bone in his legs.
Adam Devine says doctors told him he was 'dying'
Adam Devine revealed his ordeal on 'In Depth With Graham Bensinger,' describing how he had been experiencing severe spasms and pain throughout his body, leading doctors to diagnose him with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder
Devine recalled that his symptoms became so severe that medical professionals believed he had SPS, also known as Moersch-Woltman Syndrome.
The condition is characterized by progressive muscle stiffness and spasms, often triggered by stimuli like noise or touch.
Singer Celine Dion has publicly detailed her struggles with the disorder in 2024 documentary 'I Am: Celine Dion.'

"For a while, they told me I was dying. Literally within this last year they told me that," Devine said, as per People.
The actor detailed the grim prognosis, explaining, "They told me I had this disease called stiff-person syndrome. And that's when your muscles get so tight that you then you can no longer walk. You can no longer move, then your heart will stop beating, because your heart is a muscle and it gets too tight to beat and then you die."
Adam Devine's near-fatal childhood accident
Adam Devine said, he was told month before his son Beau was born that he had stiff-person syndrome.
Devine, who shares his 1-year-old son with wife, Chloe Bridges, added. "And so I'm like, ‘Oh great, now I'm gonna die.' "

Devine, 41, has previously spoken about the 1997 accident that left him with severe injuries when he was hit by a cement truck while crossing the street at age 11.
He shared on Dax Shepard’s 'Armchair Expert' podcast in 2019 that he nearly lost both legs due to the damage.
"Broke everything from my waist down besides my right femur," Devine said at the time.
Recalling the moment of the accident, he explained, "My buddy was across the street and yelled, ‘Come on!’ And I took that as ‘the coast is clear, come on.' I grew up in the suburbs so new houses were being built every day."
"Three cement trucks were going down the hill and two were coming down at the exact same time," he said. The accident left Devine with crushed legs, extensive skin loss, and a long road to recovery.
Devine said he, "crushed everything from the knees down and took all my skin off." He spent two weeks in a medically induced coma and underwent 26 surgeries between sixth grade and his first year of high school.
Adam Devine finds relief through alternative treatment
After undergoing hip surgeries in 2024, Adam Devine saw little improvement in his condition.
However, he shared that a stem cell treatment in Medellín, Colombia, has provided some relief.
"It hurts to sit for too long, it hurts to stand for too long, it hurts to walk for too long," Devine explained about his daily struggles in the recent interview.
"I have to foam roll two-three times a day, I have to do stretches two-three times a day."
Despite the challenges, Devine believes his latest treatment has made a difference.

"It is kind of working," he said, adding, "I now feel the best I’ve been in about three years."
Though he initially aspired to be a comedy-action star die to his condition, Devine admitted that his condition has altered his career aspirations.
"Now I’m like, I’m gonna be the comedy guy in the action movie with the action star and he does all the action stuff," he said.
