CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Adam Montgomery, the New Hampshire father convicted of brutally beating his 5-year-old daughter Harmony Montgomery to death, has been sentenced to 45 years to life in prison.

Despite the possibility of a lighter sentence in exchange for revealing the location of Harmony's body, unrepentant Montgomery remained steadfastly silent during his court hearing.

Adam Montgomery rejects offer to reduce sentence in exchange for body's location

Prosecutors offered to reduce Montgomery's sentence by up to 21 years if he disclosed where he disposed of Harmony's body. Senior Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati informed the judge that if Montgomery could provide Harmony’s family with closure by disclosing the location where he left the toddler’s body, the state would no longer pursue the maximum sentence of 56 years to life, opting instead for 35 years to life.

Nevertheless, Montgomery, who maintains his innocence, refused to provide closure for Harmony's family.  Agati emphasized to the judge that the father's failure to repent “is yet another reason” for imposing the harshest penalty. Judge Amy Messer ultimately sentenced Montgomery to 45 years to life, emphasizing the severity of his crimes and his violent criminal history.

“In light of the egregious nature of the crimes of which you have been convicted in this case, and taking into consideration your extremely violent criminal history, the court finds the only way to do this is to keep you off the streets,” Judge Messer said, reported New York Post.

Tragic fate of Harmony Montgomery

Prosecutors allege that Montgomery killed Harmony on December 7, 2019, and then stuffed her body in a duffle bag. He then disposed of the body on March 4, 2020, in Manchester, NH, after keeping it in a cooler for over three months.

He had used a U-Haul truck to dump her remains at an undisclosed location. Harmony’s remains have still not been found though a judge declared her legally dead in March at the request of her mother Crystal Sorey.

Harmony Montgomery's aunt confronts killer as defense denounces sentence reduction offer

The offer to reduce Montgomery's sentence came after Harmony's aunt, Brittany Sorey, pleaded for him to disclose the location of her niece's body.

“You are a selfish, evil, conniving, poor excuse for a human being,” Sorey told the convicted child killer. “If you’re any type of man at all Adam, or [if[ you loved her for just a second, you would tell us where she is.”

Defense attorney Caroline Smith dismissed the offer as “a stunt” by the prosecution and asserted Montgomery's innocence. “Mr Montgomery does not have to express remorse here for something for which he maintains his innocence,” Smith reportedly told the court.

“When he discovered his daughter’s death, he broke, and he did inexplicable things. Even he can’t explain his actions,” Smith alleged. “But eventually he pulled it together, and he was able to say goodbye to his daughter, and that’s what he did.”

Montgomery was convicted in February of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, falsifying physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with witnesses. He now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison for his heinous crimes.
