CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Adam Montgomery, the father of five-year-old Harmony Montgomery, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday, May 9.
Adam was found guilty by a jury on Thursday, February 22, in a trial which he reportedly never attended and will now serve 56 years in prison.
The breakdown of Adam Montgomery’s prison sentence
This sentencing comes five years after a Massachusetts judge controversially placed Harmony, who had been in and out of foster care, in Montgomery’s custody in New Hampshire.
The sentence comprises 45 years for the murder charge, four to eight years for assault, three-and-a-half to seven years for witness tampering, and three-and-a-half to seven years for falsifying evidence, as reported by CNN.
Additionally, Montgomery received a 12-month suspended sentence for abuse of a corpse. The charges will be served consecutively, which means one after the other.
Harmony’s mother, Crystal Sorey, had last spoken to her daughter in the spring of 2019 via a FaceTime call.
Prosecutors allege that Montgomery killed Harmony on December 7, 2019, and then stuffed her in a duffle bag. He then disposed of her body on March 4, 2020, after transporting and consolidating it over three months in Manchester, NH.
He had used a U-Haul truck to dump her remains at an undisclosed location.
Harmony’s remains have still not been found though a judge declared her legally dead in March at the request of her mother Crystal Sorey, as reported by MEAWW.
Crystal Sorey says she will continue to search for her daughter Harmony Montgomery
In the court, several people, including Harmony’s mother, Crystal Sorey provided victim impact statements.
Sorey teared up and shook as she read her statement and promised to find her daughter, saying, “With or without you we will find my daughter," as per WMUR video.
Sorey started her statement by recalling Adam's assurance to her as the trial was sought. "I did not kill my daughter and I look forward to trial to refute those offensive claims," Sorey quoted what Adam had told her.
She went on to debunk his other lies before saying, "you had actually stuffed her in the bag."
She also expressed her wish for Montgomery to experience “nothing but pain and misery for the rest of your pathetic life.”
Sorey also spoke about her love for her daughter and her hatred for the “monster” and “coward” who took her life.
She said, “She had a life worth living, unlike your own. And it bothered you to your core that she was nothing like you and everything like me.”
Harmony Montgomery's stepmother Kayla Montgomery was also prisoned
Harmony’s stepmother, Kayla Montgomery, was also charged in connection with the case.
She testified against Adam, alleging that he beat her and forced her to lie about Harmony’s disappearance.
She pleaded guilty to perjury charges in 2022 and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but was released on parole in March, as per People.
Adam’s public defender, Caroline L Smith, maintained his innocence in court, stating that he "did not kill his daughter,” but did “inexplicable things” after learning of her death.
