NIGERIA, AFRICA: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Lightway Academy in Abuja, Nigeria, on Friday during the visit as part of celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

The couple captured Nigerians' attention by interacting with kids, taking selfies, and being hoarded by admirers as they began their three-day tour in true royal style.

According to British photojournalist and presenter Helena Chard, the purpose of the three-day tour is to increase the couple's public image after they quit their royal duties in 2020, per Fox News.

The couple, who are now residents of California, were greeted warmly in the vast African nation. Their first stop, the Lightway Academy in the expansive capital city of Abuja, presented them with a dance performance by kids after they were given traditional wooden beaded necklaces from Nigeria.

Governor Uba Sani and other government representatives greeted Harry and Meghan when they arrived in Kaduna State after they had visited schoolchildren and met with officials at Nigeria's Defence Headquarters.

Governor Sani dressed Harry in traditional Hausa clothing after giving him a framed picture of Diana cradling him as a kid, a picture of him and Meghan on their wedding day, and other gifts.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan conducted their Nigerian tour 34 after Princess Diana visited the African country with Prince Charles, per Daily Mail. The Princess of Wales showed the compassion for which she gained fame at that time by holding the hand of a leprosy patient.

According to the Duke, his and Meghan's visit is yet another attempt to carry on his mother's "unfinished" work. In 2022, Harry declared that he felt "obligated" to "as much as possible" carry on her legacy.

Experts claim Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's trip to Nigeria is to maintain their 'royal image'

According to Fox News, the African tour will also showcase the Invictus Games, which Nigeria took part in for the first time in September 2023.

British presenter Helena Chard claimed, "The couple needs positive PR as they are often reminded of their failures. They also seem to crave power and seek things to elevate themselves."

"The Invictus Games elevates them in the world of philanthropy and anything to do with Invictus is a guaranteed great press moment," Chard added.

Chard further alleged, "Harry and Meghan will try and achieve as much press and attention as possible. They are not working royals, but want and need to keep up a royal image."

Internet compares Prince Harry to African royalty

Following his photo acceptance of Princess Diana, Prince Harry has been compared by some on social media to African royalty.

One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Prince Harry is now a Nigerian prince."

A second user added, "I love Prince Harry. He respects Nigerian culture by dressing like one of them."

"Nigerian Prince," remarked a third one, while a fourth one noted, "An African King rising...what is your problem."

"Prince Harry has officially been welcomed in the Nigerian community," said another.
