Alan Cumming jokes Taylor Swift 'stole' his plaid look at VMAs on Emmys red carpet

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hollywood is currently immersed in a plaid trend. Just days after Taylor Swift graced the MTV VMAs red carpet in a plaid Dior outfit, Alan Cumming made a statement at the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards dressed in the classic pattern.

On Sunday, September 15, the 59-year-old Scottish actor turned heads in a white jacket featuring a plaid wrap detail paired with a black kilt.

Speaking with People on the Emmys red carpet, Alana Cumming revealed that his ensemble was designed by Teddy Vonranson.

When asked about the similarities between Swift's VMAs outfit and his wardrobe from his series 'The Traitors', the actor quipped, "The b*** stole my look."

He added, "It was hilarious because, well, actually because in the next season there's a look I have that's obviously very similar. But I think it's hilarious that so many people sort of said Taylor Swift looks like Alan Cumming, which is a sentence I never thought I would hear." 

At the 2024 Emmys, Cumming bagged the Outstanding Host for a Reality Or Reality Competition Program award, beating out the likes of RuPaul's Drag Race's RuPaul, Top Chef's Kristen Kish, and Survivor's Jeff Probst.

Earlier in the week, Alan Cumming took to Instagram to post a collage comparing his outfits from 'The Traitors' with Swift's VMAs ensemble. The caption on the collage read, "I'm Taylor Swift and welcome to The Traitorsssss." 

He playfully captioned the post, "Ahem, @taylorswift."

Swift's MTV VMAs outfit featured a striking yellow plaid bustier top with an attached skirt, black velvet hot pants, and caged leather gloves, all designed by Dior.

She completed her look with thigh-high Stuart Weitzman boots and dramatic makeup. Her hair was styled in textured waves with side-swept bangs.

The ensemble was accented with 30-carat Lorraine Schwartz pear-shaped canary yellow diamond earrings set in black jade, complementing the yellow plaid theme.

Alan Cumming's Emmys red carpet joke didn't go unnoticed. 

One netizen wrote, "She totally stole his look. Love you Alan! <3," while another commented, "Taylor's outfit looks like Carol Burnett's recreation of Scarlett O'Hara's dress when she was wearing a curtain and pole."

"I went trick or treating in an outfit identical to Taylors and didn’t get one piece of candy," quipped a person. Someone else remarked, "I'm not that much of a fan of Taylor Swift, but whoever put that look together for her needs a raise. It's dynamite."

"Hard to say why either one wanted to wear it, yech," shared an individual who wasn't thrilled with either outfits.
