‘You’ve overplayed your hand’: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted for jab at Samuel Alito while slamming MTG’s upside-down flag post

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., found herself at the center of a social media storm after making comments about US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito while criticizing Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., on an X (formerly Twitter) post.

Ocasio-Cortez's remarks sparked a wave of reactions from conservatives and other social media users, who accused her of making baseless allegations and called her out for what they perceived as disrespectful behavior.

The controversy began when Ocasio-Cortez responded to an upside-down American flag post shared by Greene in reaction to former President Donald Trump’s New York trial conviction. Trump had been convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records, and Greene used the image to characterize the verdict as an injustice against American principles, Fox News reported.

Ocasio-Cortez took the opportunity to question Greene’s motivation for sharing the post, suggesting a link to Justice Alito. "Who did you learn that from, Samuel Alito?" she commented on Greene’s post on Thursday, May 30.

This remark was a direct reference to an earlier incident involving Alito and the display of an upside-down flag at his Virginia home.



 

The upside-down flag became a symbol of controversy after The New York Times reported that it had been seen flying at Alito's home around the time of the January 6 Capitol riot. The Times article attempted to link Alito to pro-Trump election deniers, suggesting the flag was a symbol used by Trump supporters disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election.

However, the narrative was challenged by The Washington Post, which clarified that the flag-raising was likely connected to a dispute involving Alito's wife, Martha-Ann, and their neighbors, rather than any political statement by the Justice himself. A spokeswoman for the Post explained, "It was not clear then that the argument was rooted in politics."

Justice Alito addressed the issue in a letter to Democratic Party lawmakers, stating, "I was not even aware of the upside-down flag until it was called to my attention. As soon as I saw it, I asked my wife to take it down, but for several days, she refused."

This explanation did little to quell the political firestorm, as Ocasio-Cortez called for a government investigation into Alito's actions. "Samuel Alito has identified himself with the same people who raided the Capitol on Jan 6, and is now going to be presiding over court cases that have deep implications over the participants of that rally," she stated.

Conservatives react to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's dig

Ocasio-Cortez’s jab at Greene and Alito did not go unnoticed, particularly among conservative voices on social media.

Conservative activist Brigitte Gabriel was particularly scathing in her response, tweeting, "Your district is disgusting. Get off your phone and pick up some trash."



 

Joe Pagliarulo, a conservative talk show host, also weighed in, challenging Ocasio-Cortez to a debate with Greene instead of making comments online. "Why don't you debate her instead of hiding behind social media. You literally work in the same place. Can I get a gin and tonic please?" he tweeted.



 

Lawyer and political commentator Joseph McBride took a different approach, posting images of flags used by Native Americans. "She learned it from Native Americans, you communist wench," he wrote.



 

Paul Szypula, another conservative commentator, shared a clip of Ocasio-Cortez arguing with Hunter Biden’s former business partner Tony Bobulinski during a Congressional hearing. He sarcastically remarked, "AOC doesn’t even know what RICO is. She’s the last person who should use the word ‘learn.’"



 

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faces online backlash

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments against Greene and Alito also drew backlash from other users on social media.

"She’s signaling that we’re a nation in distress. Because we are a nation in distress. We understand you hate Christians, but not everything is about you AOC," one posted on X.

"AOC is snarking on the day her side throws their opposition in jail. We'll remember," someone else added.

"You've overplayed your hand, and Democrats will pay dearly," a comment read.

"The House Idiot is babbling again. Must be a slow day at the bar," another quipped.
