HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA: Former President Donald Trump pledged enhanced protection for Second Amendment rights to National Rifle Association members, vowing stronger support if re-elected in the 2024 presidential election, reported The Hill.

The Second Amendment of the Constitution protects the right of US citizens to keep and bear arms.

During his keynote address on Friday, February 9, at an NRA event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Republican frontrunner said, "I promise you this, with me at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, no one will lay a finger on your firearms — just as took place for four years when I was your president."

"I will uphold those glorious words, 'shall not be infringed," he added.

Trump's remarks came a day after securing decisive victories in Nevada and Virgin Islands caucuses as he closes in on the GOP presidential nomination, leading to a likely rematch with President Joe Biden in November.

Donald Trump reiterates his pro-gun policy

At the event, the former President emphasized his 2019 initiative to remove the US from the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. He also highlighted his decision to cancel his predecessor Barack Obama's "corrupt use" of Social Security data in the gun license approval or denial process.

"The right to self-defense does not end when you step outside the front door of your house," Trump said.

"On day one of my new term, I will stop Joe Biden's war on lawful, gun owners. It's a war. What they're doing is crazy," he added.

Trump, who has described himself the "most pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment" President, made a similar pledge in April 2023 while addressing the NRA, calling himself a "loyal friend" of the gun rights advocacy group who "saved" the Second Amendment while being in office.

Despite his ongoing legal struggles, the billionaire former President is the clear frontrunner of the Republican Party. His only in-party opponent, Nikki Haley, has failed to gain momentum to threaten Trump's dominant lead.

The next primary will take place in South Carolina on February 24.

Internet reacts to Trump's remarks

Social media users criticized the former President for pouring oil into a non-existent fight, as no president has ever tried to take away citizens' right to keep arms.

One user said, "No one has laid a hand on firearms during the Obama or Biden presidencies... Just another scare tactic..."

Another user remarked, "He’s creating a fight where none exists so he can appear to be the savior. Boring. Reruns."

"So for 16 years now the @GOP has said "someone is coming for your guns but no one does," a third response read.

A fourth remark read, "Im confused, it sounds like he’s under the false impression the government is coming to people’s homes and taking their firearms. A politician wouldnt lie to me tho right?"

"They been coming for our guns since at least the 70's that i can remember.. To date: Zero guns taken away," one user added.
