COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman, has communicated to former President Donald Trump that she will resign from her post later this month, after the South Carolina primary on February 24.

Sources informed the Associated Press on Tuesday, February 6, that Trump, who is also the Republican presidential frontrunner, is expected to endorse Michael Whatley, the Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, as McDaniel's successor, after the Palmetto State's primary.

McDaniel, 50, was asked to vacate her position by the MAGA figurehead, citing the RNC's decade-low fundraising numbers going into a presidential election year, per a report by the New York Post.

What were the indications from Trump leading up to McDaniel’s resignation from her post?

The 77-year-old hinted on Monday, February 5, in a Newsmax interview of the eventual ousting of McDaniel.

A reporter pressed him on whether McDaniel should resign after three consecutive election cycles of Republican underperformance.

“Is it time for Ronna McDaniel to step aside?” the Newsmax reporter asked.

The former United States President remarked, “I think she knows that, I think she understands that.”

Trump also suggested in a Truth Social post that he'll be "making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth," referring to McDaniel as a "friend" and complimenting her work in Michigan during his 2016 presidential election triumph over Hillary Clinton.

Trump sat with McDaniel in a meeting that reportedly lasted over two hours at his Mar-a-Lago resort on the day of the post.

The preference of the former POTUS for Michael Whatley to take over the leadership of the Republican National Committee is rooted in Whatley's belief that the 2020 general election was marred by mass voting fraud, as well as his perceived instrumental role in securing North Carolina for Trump during the same election, as per a report by The New York Times.

Whatley also currently serves as the general counsel at the Republican National Committee (RNC) and has backed efforts to draft new voting laws to address concerns of fraud.

In accordance with RNC rules, an election for a new leader must be held if Ronna McDaniel were to resign.

As of December 31, 2020, the RNC had a cash balance of just $8 million, as per Federal Election Commission filings. This marks the lowest cash balance for the RNC since it had just over $5 million in cash on hand at the end of 2014.

In contrast, the Trump campaign concluded the calendar year 2023 with a cash reserve of $42 million.

“Nothing has changed,” RNC spokesperson Keith Schipper said in a statement to the press. “This will be decided after South Carolina.”
