NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Reigniting his longstanding feud with former President Donald Trump, Grammy-winning musician John Legend has once again thrust himself into the center of a political firestorm.

In a candid interview on MSNBC, the singer-songwriter didn't hold back, unleashing a torrent of criticism at Trump's record on race relations and leveling the explosive accusation that the former president is "truly, truly a racist" at his core, as per The Daily Beast.

John Legend debunks Donald Trump's claims of being a champion for Black Americans

Despite Trump's claims of being a champion for Black Americans, Legend pointed to what he sees as a contradictory track record. While Trump's supporters highlight bipartisan criminal justice reform during his presidency, Legend argued that Trump's rhetoric and actions tell a different story.

"He’s not been an ally. At the same time he’s claiming credit for those small things, he’s also saying if people are stealing something they should get shot in the middle of the store," Legend emphasized.

Legend referenced Trump's response to the protests following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, saying, "When we protested the killing of George Floyd, he advocated for the military to shoot us in the streets."

Delving deeper into his critique, Legend pointed to what he sees as Trump's long history of alleged discriminatory practices and divisive racial beliefs. "He wouldn't let us live in his buildings back in the day," Legend asserted, referring to lawsuits accusing Trump's real estate companies of racial discrimination in the 1970s.

"He’s made it clear throughout his life that he believes Black people are inferior. He clearly believes in a genetic hierarchy of humanity and it’s racially determined," Legend added.

The musician also took aim at Trump's comments on immigration, accusing him of preferring predominantly white countries as sources of new arrivals. "You even hear what he says about immigration and what countries he wants people to come in from. They're all very white," Legend said.

Notably, Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen were among numerous celebrities who pledged to leave the United States if Trump won the 2020 election. Their feud with Trump also became part of the 'Twitter files,' a series of articles revealing left-wing bias on X (formerly Twitter), according to Daily Mail.

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election.
