LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Ashlee Simpson has disclosed that she was asked to wear a purity ring by her father, Joe Simpson but she refused to obey him.

The singer appeared on the ‘Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson & Olivia Allen’ podcast, where she shared, as reported by PEOPLE, “I would come off way more rebellious than I even was, because I was like, oh no, I’m not doing that.”

Ashlee Simpson speaks about her rebellious nature

“I would see how my dad would be like, ‘Oh, you can’t talk to this guy. Here’s your ring to save yourself.’ He tried to give me one at 12 and I was like, ‘Oh, no thank you. I won’t be telling you when I have sex,’” she shared, referring to the rings that mean one would keep themselves virgin until their marriage.

“And meanwhile, I never did [have sex] until I was 17, but I always wanted it to be open that you don’t know what I’m doing,” the ‘Outta My Head’ singer said.

Ashlee Simpson credits her mother for making her feel ‘free’

During the podcast, Ashlee also spoke about how she and her sister Jessica Simpson were raised differently by their mother, Tina Simpson.

“My mom really would pay attention and see me if I needed something different, and she would make that time. And now that we’re all parents we finally get the other side,” she told Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen.

“Growing up, I was really an independent soul and I wanted to like, do my own effing thing. They had to let me kind of be free and have that moment, or at least feel free. And sometimes too free,” Ashlee added.

Ashlee Simpson opens up about the 2004 SNL controversy

Elsewhere on the podcast, the ‘Pieces of Me’ hitmaker discussed her infamous 2004 ‘Saturday Night Live’ lip-synching incident.

At the time, she faced embarrassment because the wrong vocals started to play while she was supposed to sing ‘Autobiography.’

Ashlee reportedly mentioned, “I think I had the No 1 song, and everything was about to go somewhere, and then it was just like, ‘Whoa.’ The humility of not even understanding what grown-a*s people would say about you – like grown men – awful, awful things.”

Later, the mother-of-three went on SNL a year later. She revealed, “I feel like having the show at that time was nice because all the people that were my fans stuck with me and I went back on stage and I went back to it all.”

“But I think having to find – at a young age – that strength to be like, no, I’m good at this. I will keep going. I will keep fighting,” Ashlee asserted.
