BAFTAs 2024: Fans disappointed as late 'Friends' star Matthew Perry is unexpectedly absent from annual In Memoriam list

The beloved 'Friends' actor, who died in his hot tub in late October at the age of 54, had a distinguished film career following his rise to fame as Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom.

Despite this, he was noticeably absent from the annual awards ceremony's tribute.

The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, a celebration of cinematic achievements, faced controversy due to the omission of Matthew Perry from its In Memoriam segment.

Despite Perry's significant contributions to film and television, and his recent death at age 54, he was absent from the televised tribute.

This oversight, despite a previous acknowledgment on the BAFTA website, sparked disappointment and anger among fans.

The exclusion of Perry's name during Hannah Waddingham's performance of Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time' was reportedly seen as a significant oversight by many viewers.

Perry, who struggled with substance abuse for years before his death, was last honored during the 2024 Emmy Awards' In Memoriam segment, per Daily Mail. 

Charlie Puth performed 'I'll See You Again', a 2015 song he collaborated on with Wiz Khalifa, as a tribute to the late Paul Walker for the 'Furious 7' soundtrack.

Fans up in arms after Matthew Perry's omission

Fans of the late star are disappointed he was snubbed from the tribute list.

A fan wrote on X, "If there was something I was bitterly disappointed about tonight at the BAFTAS was the failure to acknowledge the passing of Matthew Perry in the people who we have lost they did it at the EMMYS."

Another person replied, "Yeah I thought the same kept waiting for his picture to come up was sad not to see him."

Someone else noted, "No mention of Matthew Perry in the #BAFTAs memorial?! Bad form @BAFTA."

A user stated, "I agree I was very disapointed in this as he was a film actor as well as Chandler."

"Maybe the drugs/alcohol are a mar on the BAFTAs name," suggested another.

BAFTA to honor Matthew Perry at TV Awards

In response to the criticism for overlooking Perry, BAFTA has reportedly confirmed that it will pay tribute to the 'Friends' star at its upcoming TV awards this year.

Perry also starred in several popular films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, such as 'The Whole Nine Yards' and 'Fools Rush In'.

The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards' In Memoriam segment, performed by Hannah Waddingham to Cyndi Lauper's 'The After Time', featured tributes to numerous industry figures, including Tina Turner.

Despite Perry's absence from this segment, BAFTA confirmed that he will be honored at its TV ceremony later this year.

"Matthew Perry will be remembered in the forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards in May," said a spokesperson, per Variety.
