Barack Obama didn’t realize Michelle’s skirt featured a hidden tribute until moments before speech
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Michelle Obama paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Marian Robinson, in a way that even her husband, former President Barack Obama, initially missed.
At an event celebrating the upcoming opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Michelle shared that a portrait of her mother was featured on her custom-designed skirt.
She noted that Obama only recognized what was on the skirt moments before she took the stage, and the discovery left him visibly emotional.
Michelle’s tribute leaves Obama emotional
During a special reception celebrating the upcoming opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former first lady shared that her skirt featured a portrait of her mother, whom she said Barack Obama, 64, had not realized was depicted on the garment until moments earlier.
Barack Obama "is really messed up. I'm giving him some time because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out that is my favorite portrait of my mom. He didn't know it existed until just a few minutes ago. I've had a few weeks to settle down"

"I am so proud of my husband. He's really messed up, I'm giving him some time, because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is a portrait, my favorite portrait of my mom, he didn't know it existed until just a few minutes ago," Michelle, 62, said during remarks at the event.
The former first lady wore a custom Acne Studios outfit featuring a black T-shirt paired with a skirt printed with one of her favorite portraits of Robinson as a young woman.
Michelle said her mother would have been proud to see the Obama Presidential Center become a reality after years of planning and construction.
"I've had a few weeks to settle down in the beauty of this skirt, but it's messing him up for good reason," she continued. "But Marian would have been so proud."
The former first lady has long been known for using fashion to make a statement, both during her years in the White House and in the years since. This time, the focus was on honoring her mother.
She also reflected on the close bond Robinson shared with Obama.
"She was so proud of her son-in-law, and the man that he is, and has been to our family, always dreaming, probably way too big, but always pulling it off," Michelle said. "Thank you for doing this for the South Side of Chicago. I love you."
Robinson died on May 31, 2024, at age 86, her family told NBC News at the time. Michelle later shared a heartfelt message remembering the woman she called her family's foundation.
Michelle Obama reflects on Marian Robinson’s legacy
Following her death, Michelle described her mother as "our rock" and the steady presence who kept the Obama family grounded through every stage of their lives.
"My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed," Michelle wrote on X. "She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today."

In the years since her mother's death, Michelle has continued to reflect on the lessons Robinson left behind.
"What she was doing was letting us know that she loved us, but that we could live life with and without her, and I understand that now as a parent," Michelle said at the event.
The portrait featured on Michelle's skirt appears to be the same image she shared publicly in 2019 while celebrating her mother's birthday.
"Whenever I see this picture and the look in my mother's eyes, I wonder if she has any idea what's coming in the decades ahead: Real love and real loss, children and grandchildren who'd keep her on her toes, a wild ride to places she'd only read about or seen on television," Michelle wrote at the time.
With the Obama Presidential Center set to open to the public this week, Michelle's heartfelt fashion statement transformed a milestone celebration into an emotional remembrance, one that even Obama didn't recognize until the very last moment.
