WASHINGTON, DC: After UFC fighter Josh Hokit's controversial remark about Michelle Obama went viral, social media users began circulating claims that the former first lady is considering a defamation lawsuit against him.

The claim emerged after Hokit, during a post-fight interview following his victory over Derrick Lewis, said, "Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?" But is there any evidence that Michelle plans to take legal action over the comments?

Claim: Obamas are weighing a defamation suit against Josh Hokit

An X (formerly Twitter) user claimed that the Obamas are considering a defamation lawsuit against Josh Hokit, the UFC, and Paramount, sharing photos of the former first couple and Hokit alongside the allegation.

The user wrote, "BREAKING: The Obamas are reportedly weighing a defamation suit against Josh Hokit, UFC & Paramount after Hokit shouted 'Michelle Obama is a man!' in a desperate attempt to extend his 15 minutes of fame for the MAGA crowd during last night’s gay wrestling contest on the WH lawn."

The post sparked widespread discussion in the comments section, with many users encouraging the Obamas to pursue legal action against Hokit. One X user wrote, "Do it, Take that loser Hokit for every penny he's worth." Another commented, "SUE. Enough of this despicable foul lie."

Fact Check: The Obamas have not announced a lawsuit against Josh Hokit

While the X post correctly references the UFC extravaganza held on the White House grounds on Sunday, April 14, and Josh Hokit's comment, there is no evidence that the Obamas are pursuing or considering a defamation lawsuit.

Although the remark sparked widespread criticism online, no credible reports show that Michelle Obama, Barack Obama, their representatives, or any reputable news organization have confirmed plans for legal action against Hokit, UFC, or Paramount.

The claim that the Obamas are "weighing" a lawsuit appears to stem from unverified social media posts that repeat the same wording without providing evidence. No official statements or reliable news reports support the allegation.

Under US law, public figures such as Michelle face a high legal standard when bringing defamation claims. They must show that a false statement was made with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard for the truth and that it caused harm.

Comments like the one Hokit made at UFC Freedom 250 are often viewed as opinion, hyperbole, or conspiracy rhetoric rather than factual claims, making successful defamation lawsuits difficult.
