Barack Obama lists his favorite movies of 2023

Barack Obama releases a list of his favorite movies at the end of every year. This year was not any different as the former US President took to X, earlier known as Twitter, to post about his top choices. The 62-year-old also mentioned why these movies are special for him. He wrote, “Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and protections. It led to important changes that will transform the industry for the better.” Obama included films produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by him and his wife Michelle Obama, films like 'Rustin', 'Leave the World Behind' and 'American Symphony'. In his post, he wrote, “I’m biased since these movies were produced by Higher Ground, but these are three of the best films this year.” He then shared his list of favorite movies of 2023:

'Rustin'

Director George C Wolfe has highlighted and honored the work of Bayard Rustin, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr, through ‘Rustin’. It is available for streaming on Netflix.

'Leave the World Behind'

‘Leave the World Behind’ is a horror film, starring Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali. It is also available to watch on Netflix.

'American Symphony'

‘American Symphony’ is like a documentary belonging to the musical genre. It was released on November 29 and can now be watched on Netflix.

'The Holdovers'

‘The Holdovers’ is a comedy movie, which revolves around a school teacher, a student, the school's head cook, and a woman. The movie will be available to watch on Peacock on December 29.

'Blackberry'

‘Blackberry’ is a film by the director Matt Johnson and it comes under the comedy/documentary genre. It can be bought on AMC+, Roku Channel, and YouTube.

'Oppenheimer'

One of the most-talked-about movies of 2023, Christopher Nolan's classic has found a place on Obama’s list too. The movie is about the father of the atomic bomb, scientist J Robert Oppenheimer.

'American Fiction'

'Anatomy of a Fall'

‘Anatomy of a Fall' is a thriller that tells the story of a female novelist who is accused of murdering her husband. The movie can be purchased on AppleTV+, Prime Video, and YouTube.

‘Monster’ is a movie by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda, which can be watched in theaters. Deadline reported that the film “centers on Minato (Soya Kurokawa), a young boy who is displaying increasingly worrying behavior both at school and at home." The synopsis added, “His mother Saori (Sakura Ando) decides to discuss it with the teaching staff at his school. It soon becomes apparent that his teacher, Hori (Eita Nagayama), is the source of all the problems. But as the mystery unfolds, the truth turns out to be more complex than expected.”

'Past Lives'
