LONDON, UK: Sophie Kinsella, the internationally bestselling author behind the 'Shopaholic' series, has passed away at the age of 55.

Her family announced her passing on Wednesday, December 10, nearly two years after she revealed she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The writer, born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, was known for transforming romantic comedy fiction and selling more than 50 million books worldwide. Her family said she died peacefully, surrounded by people and comforts she loved most.

Kinsella first disclosed her diagnosis publicly in April 2024, saying that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer.

She also stated that she had undergone "Successful surgery and subsequent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which is still ongoing." Glioblastoma is reportedly the most aggressive form of brain cancer, with a five-year survival rate of 5%.

A defining voice in modern romantic comedy

Madeleine Sophie Wickham published her first novel, 'The Tennis Party', at age 24, while working as a financial journalist.

Five years later, under the pen name of Sophie Kinsella, she released 'The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic', introducing readers to Becky Bloomwood and launching one of the most successful rom-com book franchises of the era.

Her books have been translated into more than 40 languages and adapted into the 2009 film 'Confessions of a Shopaholic', starring Isla Fisher.

Kinsella went on to write eight more 'Shopaholic' novels along with numerous standalone titles, including 'Can You Keep a Secret?' and 'The Undomestic Goddess'.

Tributes from fellow artists poured in.

Jill Mansell wrote, "This is the saddest news... In both respects she brought so much joy to the world."

Adele Parks added, "She'll be missed so much but celebrated too and will live on in millions of minds and hearts."

Kinsella's most recent work, the 2024 novella 'What Does it Feel Like', drew on her experience with cancer. In its introduction, she wrote that she had "always processed my life through writing."
