Milly Alcock says 'Supergirl' cape remade using material from Christopher Reeve’s 'Superman' suit
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Milly Alcock has revealed an interesting detail about her upcoming film 'Supergirl'. In a recent interview, the young actress shared that her cape carries a special connection to Christopher Reeve’s 1978 'Superman'.
She said the cape used in Craig Gillespie’s film is made from the remaining material of the iconic costume from the 1978 movie.
However, she did not disclose how much of the cape uses the original fabric or how extensively it was incorporated into the design. The revelation has added an unexpected nostalgic touch ahead of the film’s release on June 26.
Milly Alcock reveals nostalgic Christopher Reeve link in 'Supergirl' cape
“My cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape,” Alcock said on the 'Raiders of the Lost' Podcast. “Yeah, I think that they found there was like 16 meters of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.”
She explained that the production used fabric tied to Reeve’s original suit, turning it into a subtle but meaningful nod.
When asked again if it came directly from the original Richard Donner film material, she added, “Yeah, I think that they found there was like 16 meters of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.”
Alcock leads the second feature-length DCU film, and while the detail may not be obvious on screen, it adds a nostalgic layer for longtime fans. With 'Supergirl' set to release in a few weeks, the film quietly continues the tradition of honoring one of the most iconic superhero legacies in cinema history.
For those unaware, Christopher Reeve first brought the Man of Steel to life in the 1978 Superman film, later reprising the role in 'Superman II', 'Superman III', and 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' (1987).
Across these films, multiple capes and costumes were used, and while they often looked nearly identical on screen, many of them were made using the same or closely matched materials to maintain continuity throughout the series.
Milly Alcock on the process of becoming 'Supergirl'
Alcock is set to debut as Kara Zor-El in DC’s 'Supergirl', and her transformation into the character came through a demanding preparation process. The 26-year-old Australian actor trained in multiple comic-book languages for the role, including Kryptonian, which she performs in key scenes with her on-screen parents.
She also worked closely on shaping Kara as a character separate from her cousin Superman (played by David Corenswet), focusing on her emotional isolation and internal struggles rather than a traditional heroic tone.
Alcock’s approach centered on portraying Kara’s survivor’s guilt and emotional burden, giving the character a more vulnerable and complex edge on screen.
