Jason Momoa calls 'Supergirl' anti-hero Lobo 'My Guy,' says Aquaman wasn’t his childhood pick
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jason Momoa is living out what he describes as a childhood dream after stepping into the role of the DC anti-hero Lobo from 'Supergirl'. In a recent interview, he said Lobo is “his guy,” making it clear how strongly he connects with the character.
He also reflected on his earlier role as 'Aquaman', noting that playing the underwater hero “wasn’t my guy growing up,” despite how widely he is now associated with the character through the 'Aquaman' franchise.
Momoa shared, "This is my childhood dream and, I mean, I would never, ever dream that I would play this character." The upcoming film Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26.
Jason Momoa talks about Lobo, sheds light on 'Aquaman' character too
Momoa spoke to Extra about his character, the infamous antihero interstellar bounty hunter Lobo, and how strongly he connects with the role. Discussing landing the part, he said, “You could, you're like, 'Oh my God, I'm the guy, I'll take on anyone to get this role.”
He also reflected on his early expectations for his place in the DC universe, explaining, "I actually thought back then, because I knew they were doing 'Batman v Superman' - I'm like, the only guy who's gonna get in the mix... I know I'm not gonna play a good guy."
Momoa added, "They're gonna want me to come in and play a villain or someone, and I'm like, oh, it's gonna be Lobo because he can fight both of them."
Jason Momoa describes his character Lobo through his eyes
Describing the character, Momoa said, “He’s an antihero 100 per cent, but I think he's that in everything. He has a code, and it’s a pretty slippery code in some sections, but it’s got clauses within that code. Definitely, he knows his wrong and his right, but he’s a bounty hunter, man. He’s gonna punch you in the face. He’s gonna fight you. But that’s why I love him.”
Jason said of the action scenes, “To do all that, it's challenging. Doing these superhero movies is tough. I’ve done quite a few, and I've seen, you know, a lot of people doing them along with me. They’re sink or swim."
When asked about Lobo’s possible return in the near future, Momoa said it will depend on audience reaction. He compared it to 'Aquaman', noting that characters often start with a brief introduction before expanding into bigger stories.
He said, “I think much like Aquaman, we got a glimpse of him. We got a bigger taste of him, and then we get the full package. So, I feel like it’s all up to the audience. If they love it, people will wanna see more, we’ll do more.'
"No one wants to not make a great movie. So I think if they like it and they like the character, and they wanna see more, we're gonna find out and then we'll make more.”
