WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) introduced a new legislation, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, aimed at preventing non-citizens from voting in elections in the United States on Wednesday, May 8.

He claimed that a "dangerously high number" of illegal immigrants are able to vote in elections, essentially affecting their outcomes, during a press conference at the base of the US Capitol promoting the bill, Fox News reported.

Speaker Johnson was accompanied by the bill's leaders in the House and Senate, Rep Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Sen Mike Lee (R-Utah).

House Speaker Mike Johnson's statement regarding the SAVE Act

Speaking with the press, Johnson stated, "Due to the wide-open border that the Biden administration has refused to close, in fact, that they engineered to open, we now have so many non-citizens in the country that if only one out of 100 of those voted, they would cast hundreds of thousands of votes."

He continued, "And since our elections are so razor-thin… and a few states decide the makeup of Congress and who is elected to the White House, this is a dangerously high number, and it is a great concern to millions and millions of Americans. It could obviously change the outcome of our elections."

However, the Speaker did admit that it was not known how many non-citizens have actually voted in the country's elections and claimed that the bill was sure to prevent it from ever happening in the future.

"States are not allowed right now to prove if somebody claims on that simple form that they're a citizen, they can vote. They're not allowed to prove whether it's true or not. We all know intuitively that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections, but it's not been something that is easily provable,"  claimed Johnson.

He further noted, "We don't have that number. This legislation will allow us to do exactly that. It will prevent that from happening."

Internet reacts to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act

One stated, "Better late than never," and another quipped, "Well, isn’t that what Biden is depending on? Awe, shucks! What a bummer," referring to the Biden administration allegedly drawing votes from illegal immigrants.

"Such a proposal may be warranted. Johnson is correct. Even if a small percentage of illegals voted it could cause an election to swing. In the meantime, more poll watchers are needed. It's sad but needed," expressed one more netizen

"Good. Glad to see Republicans standing up for something, instead of just giving the Democrats almost everything they want," shared a person, while someone else stated, "If you cannot show it that proves you are a citizen then you should not be allowed to vote. End of story. Any legislation that makes that law I am for."
