WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden has declared that he is in superior physical condition in comparison to former president Donald Trump during an interview with BET despite his memory lapses.

Addressing concerns from fellow Democrats about his mental fitness, Biden insisted that he is still capable of leading the country.

In the interview, President Joe Biden addressed the age difference and physical condition between him and Donald Trump, chuckling as he noted, "Look, I’m only three years older than Trump, okay? And I think I’m in a little better physical shape than he is," subtly referring to Trump's weight.

Biden acknowledged the public's concern about his age, stating, "It’s not unreasonable for people to say, ‘Wait a minute, you’re 81 years old,'" in his conversation with Ed Gordon of BET News.

He stressed that as long as he can demonstrate his capability to lead and get things done, his age should not be a factor. “So I think it’s a legitimate thing for the race and as long as I can demonstrate it is not affecting my ability to compete and my ability to get things done, my ability to literally lead the world,” Biden asserted.

When asked if he would reassess his fitness for office in the future, Biden responded, "Well as a practical matter, yes. But there’s no reason to believe that’s not [sic] going to happen.”

In a moment that raised further concerns about his mental acuity, Biden struggled to recall the name of Herbert Hoover while criticizing Trump’s job creation record.

“You know, there’s only two presidents in American history who have come to office and left with fewer jobs,” Biden began. “And the other was a guy we all know very well — um, so uh, I, I call — anyway. Trump is one of them.”

Despite this lapse, Biden has previously referred to Trump as “Donald ‘Herbert Hoover’ Trump” in campaign speeches.

Biden faces calls from 22 congressional Democrats to step aside following a challenging debate performance on June 27. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met with Biden to discuss these concerns. However, the White House refuted reports suggesting unfavorable feedback from the leaders.

“The President told both leaders he is the nominee of the party, he plans to win, and looks forward to working with both of them to pass his 100 days agenda to help working families,” a Biden spokesman said, according to the New York Post.

President Joe Biden was, however, widely mocked on social media for claiming he is "in a better physical shape" than Donald Trump.

"He thinks that bc his 'thinker' is broken," one social media user wrote on X.

"What? He can barely walk and is laying in bed because he is sick. Plus his entire party is calling to replace him. Great work guys," another wrote.

"Biden is dazed and confused," read one comment.

"We all watched Biden struggle to ascend the short stairs on Air Force One today leaving Las Vegas. His delusions are getting stronger," someone else chimed in.

"Enough with the gaslighting," another added.

Polling data and public opinion

This comes as a new national poll conducted after the Biden-Trump presidential debate highlighted the voters' concerns. As per the poll, nearly 80% of voters are concerned about Biden "not having the necessary mental and physical health to be a president for a second term."

The NBC News survey, conducted from July 7-9 among 800 registered voters, revealed that Trump leads Biden by 45% to 43% in a head-to-head race.

Despite the close matchup, the poll highlighted significant concerns among Democratic voters, with 62% wishing for a different candidate at the top of their party's ticket instead of the 81-year-old incumbent. Additionally, 79% of all voters expressed worry about Biden’s mental and physical capabilities.

In contrast, only 50% of respondents had similar concerns about Trump, who is 78 years old. However, 58% indicated they had major or moderate concerns regarding Trump potentially being found guilty by a jury in New York "on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a hush money case," as well as facing additional felony charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

The poll also explored a potential head-to-head matchup between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. With Harris being considered a possible replacement for Biden if he were to drop out of the race, the poll found that Trump leads Harris by 47% to 45%.
