Trump's name was headed back to Kennedy Center, then came 'act of defiance' court challenge
WASHINGTON, DC: Trump’s aspiration to see his name on the facade of the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has hit another roadblock after a new legal challenge sought to block the board's approval before installation can proceed.
The Trump-aligned board of trustees voted in August 2026 to add new building inscriptions crediting Trump for renovations, prompting opponents to quickly file emergency legal challenges to block it.

New filing seeks to block board's approval
Rep Joyce Beatty (D-OH), an ex-officio Kennedy Center trustee, filed the emergency motion on Thursday, August 20, after the board voted on August 13 to put Trump’s name on the building’s historic front portico and rename the plaza in front of the building "President Donald J Trump Plaza."
The filing calls the plan a "breathtaking act of defiance" of both Congress and the court, as it urges the court to block the approval before September 8.
"Now, in a new and breathtaking act of defiance of Congress and of this Court, Defendants have voted to return President Trump's name to the Kennedy Center's façade," the filing said.
According to the filing, under the board's resolution, Trump's name would appear below President Kennedy's on the front portico in two places.
"Restored and Renovated by President Donald J Trump," the first inscription would read, according to the filing.
A line reading, "Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund,” would be added once the fund reached $100 million, the filing said.
The plan to add Trump’s name twice comes despite a May ruling by US District Judge Christopher Cooper of the District of Columbia.
The court observed that the board had no legal authority to put Trump's name on the building.
Kennedy Center board delays Trump signage change
The performing arts institution told a federal court it will not move ahead with the controversial signage before September 8.
The delay comes as a legal challenge over the proposed renaming continues, leaving Trump’s allies on the center’s board waiting for a court ruling before making the latest change to the building’s facade.
The latest development centers on a decision by the Kennedy Center's Trump-backed board to postpone the physical installation of the new inscription.
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), a Kennedy Center board member, says she and her lawyers "are going back to court" after the board voted Thursday to put President Trump's name back on the outside of the building.

Earlier, a federal judge on May 29, 2026, blocked the Trump administration’s plan to close the Kennedy Center for a multi-year renovation, ruling the board's vote was "ill-informed and seemingly preordained."
