NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Bill Byrge, the actor beloved for his role as Bobby in the popular 'Ernest' movie series, has died at the age of 92.

His cousin Sharon Chapman confirmed his death, revealing that Byrge died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, January 9.

The cause of his death has not been disclosed. Bill Byrge, known for bringing joy to audiences, leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.

Chapman shared the news of Byrge's death on her Facebook page with a heartfelt tribute.

"My cousin, Bill Byrge, passed away in the Nashville area today at 12 pm. He was a beautiful soul who made people laugh without even trying," Chapman wrote in the post.



 

Chapman highlighted Byrge’s humble beginnings and his values.

"He was the 'Bobby' character in several 'Ernest' movies with Jim Varney. I always teased him of being a 'star' in our family," she wrote.

"He deserved it as raised poor, but his momma taught him love, respect, and faith which he showed to everyone," Chapman added. 

She concluded her tribute saying, "Heaven gained a sweet soul today. Love you, Billy. See you soon!"

Bill Byrge career began when he was discovered just walking 'down a sidewalk' 

Bill Byrge gained fame playing Bobby alongside Jim Varney in several 'Ernest' movies, including 'Ernest Goes to School' and 'Dr Otto And The Riddle of The Gloom Beam.'

Chapman revealed to TMZ how Byrge’s career began unexpectedly when he was discovered "just walking down a sidewalk."

His breakout role as a gas station attendant in the 1985 movie 'Dr Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam' paved the way for several more roles in the 'Ernest' franchise, according to Daily Mail

Despite his success in Hollywood, Byrge chose to return to a quieter life after the death of his co-star Jim Varney in 2000 due to lung cancer.

Chapman shared that even though Bill enjoyed his time in the movie biz, "it wasn’t his true calling."

Byrge returned to work at the Metro Nashville Public Library where he had been employed before his acting career.
