LOS ANGELES, CA: Comedian and television host Bill Maher has delivered a scathing review of the administration's Middle East combat timeline, arguing that President Donald J Trump completely bungled a historic opportunity for regime change in Tehran.

Speaking during an appearance on Billy Bush’s Hot Mics podcast on Wednesday, May 27, the Real Time host revealed that while he initially backed the executive decision to engage in a direct military conflict with Iran, the White House drastically mistimed its opening tactical moves.

"There’s still a possibility that the regime will be overthrown. My personal feeling is they missed their window," Maher told Bush. "They should have started the war when the people were in the streets, because that was the time to do it."

Delayed campaign sacrifices local leverage

Maher’s unexpected critique introduces a unique angle to the conflict's media coverage, blending his partial endorsement of the war effort with sharp condemnation of its execution.

The comedian methodically detailed how the administration's prolonged hesitation inadvertently sacrificed crucial organic revolutionary elements within the country.

"They waited until the regime killed all those people in the streets, waited a couple of months, and then all of those people who would be there to lead the revolution — they’re all gone now," Maher asserted.

He specifically referenced the widespread internal civil protests that shook the theocratic state in late 2025 and early 2026.

Independent international monitoring organizations estimate that roughly 30,000 peaceful citizens were murdered during the government's subsequent domestic security crackdown, while White House data briefs claim that up to 42,000 individuals were butchered by the clerical regime.

Peace talks stall over armistice details

The public dressing-down lands at a highly sensitive moment for the administration, surfacing right as secret diplomatic delegations try to salvage a shaky regional armistice.

Trump announced over the weekend that a comprehensive peace pact was finally coming together to freeze the three-month war and would be formally unsealed shortly.

However, separate reports from international mediators suggest that resolving the language on critical nuclear material and trade corridors could stall a final document for at least another week.

While Maher conceded that allied forces could still be planning an unannounced, high-impact operation to surprise and dismantle Iran's remaining leadership cadres, he insisted that the botched campaign should be brought to an immediate, clean end before an already bad geopolitical situation degrades any further.
