MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Bill Maher took aim at the growing hostility toward Elon Musk and Tesla during his monologue on 'Real Time with Bill Maher', on March 21.

Maher delivered a mix of satire and sharp commentary on the left’s changing stance on the billionaire and his electric vehicle empire, Mediaite reported.

Bill Maher mocks liberals for abandoning Tesla over Elon Musk’s ties to Trump

Bill Maher kicked off his monologue by humorously addressing the plight of two astronauts who had just returned to Earth after spending nine months aboard the International Space Station.

Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, whose mission was unexpectedly extended due to spacecraft safety concerns, arrived home on March 21, only to find that Tesla, once a darling of progressives, had become a target of left-wing ire.

"I tell you, those two astronauts who were up in space for nine months and just got back, they must be like, ‘Wait, the liberals hate Tesla now?’” he added.

He then took a jab at the recent wave of vandalism and arson attacks against Tesla vehicles and dealerships, a radical response from some who oppose Musk’s close ties to President Donald Trump.

As Musk’s work for Trump entered its third month this week, his electric vehicle company became the target of boycotts.

"Some who feel aggrieved by the billionaire’s slashing of government jobs and budgets have taken things further than selling or refusing to buy Teslas," Bill Maher noted.

“The vehicles have been vandalized – and in some cases, shot at and firebombed in parking lots and at dealerships.”

He then delivered a signature punchline that highlighted the absurdity of the situation.

“Liberals are furious at Elon, so they are burning Teslas. Have you seen this? All sorts of demonstrations. Burning Teslas. It’s like—It’s like drag queens attacking wigs.”

Elon Musk and Donald Trump's relationship

The shift in liberal attitudes toward Elon Musk isn’t just about Tesla; it’s tied to his deepening involvement in politics.

During the nine months, Wilmore and Williams were in space, Trump secured a victory in the 2024 election and appointed Musk to run the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a move that sparked heated debates over Musk’s efforts to shrink the federal government’s size and scope.

On the other hand, Trump has also addressed recent violent protests at Tesla dealerships, labeling such actions as "domestic terrorism" and pledging to take action against those responsible.

Despite his endorsement of Tesla, Trump has maintained a nuanced stance on electric vehicles (EVs) in general, stating, "I'm for electric cars. I have to be because, you know, Elon endorsed me very strongly," while also emphasizing that consumers should have the option to choose between electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles.
