LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO host Bill Maher doesn't think that God intervened to prevent the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump last week, and he believes that those who do are on the verge of labeling him a "demigod."

During 'Real Time with Bill Maher's' closing monologue, the host made fun of Trump supporters who assert that a divine intervention prevented the assassination of the former president, advising them to change their perspective and abandon their "magical thinking."

"Enough is enough with interpreting every event as a DM [direct message] from heaven," Maher said, rebuking religious Trump supporters during the segment, Fox News reported.

Bill Maher condemns Donald Trump's attempted assassination

Bill Maher denounced the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at the opening of his show, just as he had done not long after the horrific incident.

He told his HBO audience on Friday, July 19, "You should be as angry about that as if the candidate you like got shot."

He also hammered the US Secret Service for appearing to drop the ball in preventing the incident, saying, "You should also be angry that the Secret Service allowed some kid with a sniper rifle and a range finder to get past the metal detectors. What? The TSA once tackled me over a bottle of Visine."

Bill Maher slams religious Donald Trump followers

Later on in the program, Bill Maher attacked the portrayal of Donald Trump's attempted murder by certain religious supporters.

The segment, titled, 'In God We Lust,' began with the host stating, "Since the bullet that was meant for Donald Trump missed him last Saturday, Republicans have been indulging in an orgy of magical thinking, saying things like, ‘Trump wears the armor of God.’"

Bill Maher shares quotes from various conservatives and pro-Donald Trump influencers

The talk show host included statements from several conservatives and pro-Trump figures asserting that God had shielded the former president, including one from Rep Steve Scalise, R-La, who was also the target of an attempted murder in 2017.

Maher read Scalise’s post about the Trump shooting, which stated, "Yesterday, there were miracles. And I think the hand of God was there too."

The host then joked about how God handled Scalise’s shooting compared to how the almighty handled Trump’s attempted take on life, "Steve was also shot, but God was having an off day. And that bullet missed his ear and went into his spleen."

Bill Maher asks Donald Trump's supporters to stop attaching religious significance to ex-POTUS' murder attempt

Warning Donald Trump's supporters to avoid attaching religious significance to him, Bill Maher continued, "America doesn’t need a demigod. From the pharaohs to Julius Caesar, to Hirohito, many cultures have tried it – the earthly being who is simultaneously divine or god-ish. And it never turns out well."

Maher mocked religious people who say they see signs from God in everything, including inanimate objects, in other parts of the segment.

He further said, "There’s a kind of person in this world who loves to see signs in everything, never asking why – if God has something to communicate to us – he doesn’t just f*****g say it. He’s God for God’s sakes. Why show up in a flapjack, or a frying pan, or a Walmart receipt?"

Internet hits back at Bill Maher for calling out Donald Trump's religious supporters

Bill Maher's recent remarks concerning the religious supporters of Donald Trump didn't sit well with netizens as many called out the TV show host for disrespecting their piety sensations.

One X (formerly Twitter) user lashed out, "If you truly don’t believe in God, it may be best if you respectfully stay out of the conversation. Especially when Christianity is the largest religious group in the world!"

Another added, "Well, that's the thing about having real faith. We don't mock others for their faith, or lack of."

"Bill Maher is a talented guy, but he is an avowed atheist. If the good Lord came down in front of Maher’s face, he’d still not believe it," remarked one user.

"Well he is an atheist so naturally he would reject a miracle which comes from God," penned someone else.
