LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Television host Bill Maher discussed Democrats attending the Munich Security Conference during an interview with CNN’s Elex Michaelson, which aired on Sunday, February 15.

Republican leaders have also criticized Democratic figures such as Gavin Newsom, Hillary Clinton, and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez for participating in the conference. Meanwhile, Democrats have used the platform to voice criticism of the Trump administration’s foreign policy and domestic actions, particularly regarding immigration.

Michaelson asked Maher about Democratic leaders like Newsom speaking on the world stage, criticizing President Trump as a “wrecking ball” and claiming the United States is no longer a global leader.

Maher responded humorously, suggesting that Munich has “replaced Iowa as the first primary state,” noting that several Democratic figures, including Gretchen Whitmer and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez were also present.

Maher then discussed Newsom’s political trajectory, " I mean, the 2028 presidential election is well underway. And our governor here in California, who I've always liked, I have issues with him."

He continued, "I'm always trying to shoo him. Getting your solar roof. Yeah, my solar, I'm always trying to shoo him toward the center. And you know, he has made some moves toward doing that. I think he has a long way to go."

Despite the hurdles, Maher described Newsom as a “talented politician” capable of contesting the right’s influence. Maher emphasized his impartial criticism of both political sides but highlighted that he believes the right poses greater dangers to the environment and democracy.

To restore balance and stability in politics, Maher added, "So I would like to have a strong Democratic candidate to get things back to a little bit of normal."

Republicans criticizes Democrats for attending the security conference

On the Republican side, Sen. Katie Britt sharply criticized Democratic priorities during her appearance on 'Fox News Sunday' with host Shannon Bream. Britt targeted Democrats for traveling to Munich to discuss “global security” while withholding funding for domestic security measures, describing the actions as politically dangerous.

She accused the Democratic Party of hypocrisy, highlighting that while they focus on international security, they obstruct funding for essential domestic safety operations.

Britt emphasized that President Donald Trump is the most capable figure for border security, interior enforcement, and negotiating deals. She stressed that Republicans are committed to enforcing the law and maintaining American safety, whereas Democrats’ political games could leave American workers, such as TSA agents, and citizens vulnerable.

Britt specifically called out sanctuary cities as contributing to ongoing security challenges, reinforcing her stance that law enforcement and national safety must remain the priority. She then concluded by urging Democrats to join Republicans in good-faith measures.
