NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Fox News hosts sharply criticized Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday, February 14, after the she appeared to struggle with a question about whether the United States should commit troops to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

The moment occurred during a town hall at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, February 13, where Ocasio-Cortez was asked directly: “Would and should the US actually commit US troops to defend Taiwan if China were to move?”

On Fox News, hosts blasted the response as unfocused and ill-prepared.

Julie Banderas said “When it came to clearly articulate her stance on a critical foreign policy issue she came across as less presidential than even Kamala Harris.”

Tomi Lahren was even more pointed in her criticism saying “This is what happens when you have people like AOC who have never been challenged, never really debated, they are in a deep blue district and are never challenged by even Democrats.”

“Then you put them on the world stage and they sound like that. Zero depth. AOC made a huge mistake putting herself in that position because now you see how shallow her pond is- almost as shallow as Kamala’s.”

The Fox News hosts implied that the answer serves as an evidence that AOC is not prepared for higher office.

Ocasio-Cortez had fumbled trying to answer the question.

Between long pauses, she mumbled, “Um, you know, I think that this is such a, you know, I think that this is a um, of course, a, um, very long-standing, um, policy of the United States”.

“And I think what we are hoping for is that we want to make sure that we never get to that point, and we want to make sure that we are moving in all of our economic research and our global positions to avoid any such confrontation and for that question to even arise”.

AOC draws flak online

The exchange also drew reaction beyond Fox News.

“This is painful,” wrote Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of 'The Dispatch'.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily because she doesn’t have an answer in her head. It’s that she has no idea how to answer without making news.”

Former CNN journalist Chris Cillizza responded succinctly to the clip: “Not great!”

While Ocasio-Cortez did not directly answer whether she would support deploying US troops, her remarks emphasized avoiding confrontation and pursuing economic and diplomatic measures.
