WASHINGTON, DC: On the Friday, September 26 episode of 'Real Time', the outspoken comedian and late-night host Bill Maher said Democrats must make changes if they want to reconnect with ordinary Americans.

According to him, the left has developed a tendency to push through “radically terrible ideas” without space for open discussion.

“If we are ever going to get back to the old America, that’s got to be the Democrats’ part of the bargain,” Maher said on the 'New Rule' segment. “Stop coming up with radically new and often terrible ideas and then, in the next breath, insist there be no debate about any of it.”

Bill Maher criticizes the left's cultural positioning

Bill Maher began his critique with one of the most contentious cultural debates of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

He criticized Democrats' support for men competing in women’s sports, adding that there’s a "lot of stuff like that on the left." He pointed out that those positions often alienate conservatives who may otherwise support compromise.

“And when conservatives see it, they say, ‘I’m sorry. We’re just not going to go along with reinventing society, often pointlessly, even if we have to cancel democracy to do it,’” Maher added.

From there, he launched into a list of progressive stances he said have been damaging to the Democratic Party’s image.

"Transing kids by self-diagnosis with no age limit, no parental notification, and no acknowledgment of social contagion. Not doing it," Maher highlighted.

“Asylum now covers any reason for anyone to come to America. Not doing it. Homelessness is a lifestyle. Natural immunity doesn’t count anymore. Whiteness is toxic. P****es in women’s prisons. Welcoming the intifada. We’re not doing it," he added.

Bill Maher slams Democrats' unwillingness to engage in debates

Beyond the issues themselves, Bill Maher accused Democrats of refusing to engage in honest debate. He said that too often, those who question or oppose progressive policies are dismissed rather than confronted in argument.

“Another thing that’s damaging Democrats is their unwillingness to debate these issues,” the comedian said. “You can’t just say s**t. Math is racist. Queers for Palestine. Looting is cool. Healthy at any weight. If the men’s football team played the women’s team, it would be a tie.”

Maher argued that while Republicans may have their own ideological extremes, Democrats weaken themselves further by shutting down discussion instead of persuading voters.

Maher also insisted that debate and compromise were essential to preserving democracy itself.

He urged Democrats to recognize that pushing controversial cultural and social positions without discussion risks alienating the very voters they need to win back.

“These fashions of politics where debate is forbidden are not sustainable,” Maher said, warning that dismissing opposing views as “bad, stupid, and deplorable” was ultimately counterproductive.

“If Democrats want to get back to the old America, they have to be willing to compromise,” he concluded, framing his remarks as both a critique and a cautionary call for the party.
