WASHINGTON, DC: Billie Joe Armstrong has ignited controversy after holding up a Donald Trump mask during a performance at Nationals Park at his Washington DC concert on Monday, July 29.

The brazen act by the frontman of rack band 'Green Day' comes weeks after the former president survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

Billie Joe Armstrong's anti-MAGA statement at the DC concert

During his performance, Bille Ioe Armstrong brandished a Donald Trump mask with the word "idiot" written in black across the forehead.

Pictures of the moment quickly circulated on social media, drawing comparisons to the infamous 2017 incident involving Kathy Lee Griffin, who posted a video of herself holding a mock severed head of Trump covered in blood.

The 52-year-old rock star also reportedly modified the lyrics in 'American Idiot' to "I'm not a part of a MAGA agenda" just before pulling out the Trump mask, according to Daily Mail.

This change is not unprecedented as he made a similar change during ABC's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Though Griffin apologized for the incident, Armstrong has not yet commented on his actions at the DC concert.

Armstrong has a history of vocal disdain for Trump. In 2022, the musician declared his intent to renounce his citizenship following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

Internet slams Billie Joe Armstrong over holding Trump mask at DC concert

Billie Joe Armstrong's latest act has only fueled the debate about the role of political expression in entertainment and netizens slammed the rockstar's controversial performance in Washington, DC just weeks after Trump survived the shooting incident.

"Ever notice how the more someone dislikes Trump the more they actually act like him. It’s curious, isn’t it?" a user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote while another user tweeted, "Of course the corporate sellouts would pull something like this. Democrats and giant corporations go hand in hand."



 



 

"And they call Republicans the weird ones? Advocating to have Trump's severed head isn't weird to you?" a netizen commented and someone remarked, "Anything to try to be relevant."



 



 

"This green-haired punk is the epitome of an AMERICAN IDIOT," a user opined while a netizen tweeted, "Green Day had a concert here in DC last night. They decided it’d be a good idea to hold up a severed Trump head. Just TWO WEEKS after he was sh*t in the head. These people are SICK."
