PARIS, FRANCE: During Sunday's (July 28) Paris Olympics swimming competition, a seemingly regular guy dove into the pool to fetch a competitor’s swim cap and viewers' hearts.

The NBC broadcast team nicknamed the man 'Bob the Cap Catcher', as the audience adored when Bob came to the rescue in the middle of the women’s swimming competition in a bright, multi-colored speedo.

On Sunday, July 28, American swimmer Emma Weber lost her swim cap during the women's 100-meter breaststroke at the Olympics.

However, an anonymous hero wearing a speedo went to the bottom of the pool at La Defense Arena to retrieve it for her. Since then, his little deed of bravery has elevated him to viral fame.

NBC broadcast commentators designated him "Bob the Cap Catcher," as he was swiftly called upon to step up in the heat of the moment and retrieve Weber's cap while wearing a brightly colored, tight bathing suit, per People.

The lifeguard plunged into the water and grabbed the cap at the bottom to thunderous applause from the spectators. He quickly swam to the pool's edge, hauled himself out, and waved to his new group of devoted viewers.

"This situation is common at swimming competitions," a Paris 2024 representative told CNN. "As the lifeguards are the only people wearing swimwear, apart from the athletes, a request may be made to fetch an item at the bottom of the pool before the next race. In this case, the request was made to the lifeguard closest to the item."

According to the spokeswoman, the lifeguard chose not to have his name revealed so that he could focus on his responsibilities for the rest of the tournament.

Nicknamed "Bob the Cap Catcher" by the NBC commentators, it was a lighthearted interlude in one of the most intensely competitive settings throughout these Olympic Games.

Olympic viewers are in stitches over 'Bob the Cap Catcher's speedo appearance

A video of the new legend known as the "Bob the Cap Catcher" became viral on X (formerly Twitter) since the NBC Olympics shared a clip of the speedo-clad cap fetcher's action.

NBC asked, "Who do you call when a swim cap falls in the pool?" in its coverage of X. The famous nickname "BOB THE CAP CATCHER" appears to be the solution.

Several online users took to X to enjoy the light-hearted moment as one wrote, "This is now and forever a Bob the Cap Catcher Stan account."

A second user quipped, "Bob the Cap Catcher bringing sexy back to the Olympics!"

"The Euro's had the Saxophone player... The Olympics has the Swim Cap Retriever... not all heroes wear capes," remarked a third user.

Another wrote, "The bizarre moment this bloke in Speedos is asked to fetch a swim cap out of the pool this morning."

"Just when I thought I'd seen it all at the Olympics! That dude in speedos stealing the show (and a lost swim cap) has got to be the most unexpected highlight reel of the games Who else is loving this unconventional display of teamwork?" exclaimed another.

Another noted, "He’s an icon he’s a legend he is the moment," while one added, "This wasn't on my Olympics bingo card."

"This fits right in line with opening ceremonies…..do we really need a man in a rainbow banana hammock jumping in to retrieve the cap?" asked another.
