LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Brett Favre, the retired NFL star, opened up about the last conversation with his friend Toby Keith who died of stomach cancer on Monday, January 5.

Faver said that he had quit chemotherapy and was okay with whatever the result would be. 

Brett Favre says Toby Keith was 'tired' of chemotherapy

Favre told TMZ Sports that he spoke to the country singer a few days before his death and sensed that he was ready to let go.

"He did say that to me when we had our conversation, he said, ‘Brett… whatever happens, I’m okay with it,’" Favre said.

The former Green Bay Packers quarterback said he called Keith every three months to check on him and hoped that he would recover from his illness.

But Keith had a different outlook. "He said, ‘I quit chemo and it probably did more damage to me than the cancer did,’" Favre recalled.

"And he said, ‘I just hope I didn’t quit it too late, but… I’m thankful I got a chance to play some shows. I finished them,’" he added.

Brett Favre says Toby Keith put on a brave front

Favre praised Keith for his courage and grace in facing his stomach cancer which he was diagnosed with in the fall of 2021.

He said the singer lost over 130 lbs but still performed at his December shows in Las Vegas. “He put on a brave front,” Favre said.

He added, "He handled it with grace and faith and family and stood up to the cancer as good as you can."

Favre also shared that he and Keith enjoyed playing golf together and that he remembered the singer’s smile and fun-loving personality.

“I can just remember him smiling, and had everyone hooting and hollering and having a lot of fun,” Favre said.

Brett Favre says Toby Keith was 'the best'

Favre said Keith was a “fun” and “entertainer” who lived his life to the fullest. He said he was saddened by his friend’s passing but also grateful for their friendship. “He was the best,” Favre said.

Keith’s family announced his death on social media on Monday night, February 5, asking for privacy and respect.

“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5 surrounded by his family,” the statement read, adding “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
