Although left with a red mark on her head and experiencing a headache, the child avoided more severe harm.

In the subsequent court hearing, Workman faced charges of first-degree attempted assault, third-degree assault, interfering with public transportation, second-degree disorderly conduct, and recklessly endangering another person due to her aggressive actions. She was found guilty except for insanity on all charges.

In the aftermath of the incident, a Max rider expressed dismay, stating, "There is no excuse for what Workman did. I don’t understand why someone would do something like that."

According to court documents, Workman claimed to have blacked out and experienced a "mental breakdown" during the violent incident. She added, "I don’t know why I hit him; I was trying to kill myself by stabbing him."

Workman is part of Portland's homeless population, a demographic that has experienced a significant rise in recent years. According to the City of Portland, overall homelessness has increased by 65 percent from 2015 to 2023, with the latest point-in-time count identifying 6,297 homeless individuals.

In addition to Portland's substantial homeless issue, the city has also witnessed a surge in fentanyl use, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency due to the ongoing crisis.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek claimed, “Our country and our state have never seen a drug this deadly addictive and all are grappling with how to respond.”
