Caitlin Clark's BF Connor McCaffery faces 'nepotism' accusations as reports of Butler coaching gig emerge

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: Indiana Fever star Cailin Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, is reportedly set to join the coaching staff at Butler University as Greg Oden's replacement.

Akeem Glaspie of The Indianapolis Star first reported that Oden is leaving his role with the Bulldogs, where he had served under head coach Thad Matta.

Oden, the No 1 overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft, began his coaching stint at Butler as the director of basketball operations in 2022.

The prospect of Connor, who has served as the assistant coach for Indiana Pacers since 2023, joining Butler's coaching staff as Oden's replacement has stirred discussions about nepotism in the basketball community, as per BroBible.

While Greg Oden's next career move remains unclear, Thad Matta is reportedly looking to fill the vacancy with Connor McCaffery.

Notably, Connor is the son of the University of Iowa men's basketball head coach, Fran McCaffery. His girlfriend, Clark, played for the Iowa Hawkeyes. 

Moreover, if he joins Butler's staff, he will have the unique opportunity to coach his two younger brothers, Patrick and Jack McCaffery.

Patrick transferred to Butler after playing for their father at Iowa, and Jack is currently committed to Butler as a 2025 recruit.

Connor's appointment has yet to be officially announced by the Indianapolis-based university, but the move is widely expected.

This development brings the McCaffery brothers under one coaching roof, continuing a family tradition that began with their father at Iowa. 

For Clark, this transition will keep her relationship with Connor geographically convenient, as Butler University is just a 15-minute drive from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where the Indiana Fever play their home games.

This tight-knit connection has raised eyebrows, with some questioning whether Connor's potential hiring is a result of his family ties rather than his coaching qualifications.

The McCaffery family has been a significant presence in college basketball, with Fran establishing himself as a well-known coach at Iowa. If Connor's hiring becomes official, it will be seen by some as a continuation of the family's influence in the sport.
