SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: A San Francisco bookstore has taken a stand against 'Harry Potter' author JK Rowling over her anti-transgender stance.

Booksmith, located in the city’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, has announced it will no longer sell her books, as reported by The Independent.

In a statement, the store founded in 1976 wrote: “In May 2025, author JK Rowling publicly committed to using her private wealth from the 'Harry Potter' series to develop the ‘JK Rowling Women’s Fund,’ an organization dedicated to removing transgender rights ‘in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces.’”

San Francisco bookstore slams JK Rowling’s fund

“With this announcement, we’ve decided to stop carrying her books. We don’t know exactly what her ‘women’s fund’ will entail, but we know that we aren’t going to be a part of it,” the statement added.

Like Booksmith, another San Francisco bookstore, Fabulosa Books, has made the same decision.

In a post on its Instagram account, the store wrote, “We are no longer buying or selling books by JK Rowling, as she is devoting her life to nastiness.”

JK Rowling’s fund protects women ‘sex-based rights’

This came after the British author launched her fund in May 2025, describing it as “a legal fighting fund for women protecting their sex-based rights.”

According to the fund’s website, the organization will support “legal representation for women and organizations who are being forced to comply with unreasonable inclusion policies regarding single-sex spaces and services, or female-only clubs and events.”

On X, she posted, “I looked into all options and a private fund is the most efficient, streamlined way for me to do this. Lots of people are offering to contribute, which I truly appreciate, but there are many other women’s rights orgs that could do with the money, so donate away, just not to me!”

Netizens slam bookstore, call the move ‘absolutely hilarious’

Meanwhile, Booksmith’s decision has been mocked online as a critic tweeted, “Jeff Bezos is happy about this because then people will order the books from Amazon.”

Another critic wrote, “Stupid Americans doing stupid things…again!”

“WHAT IS THIS, THE 1930S AGAIN!?” the third one asked.

“In other words - misogynistic owners of stores hate real women and like banning books,” an X user posted.

The second user stated, “I thought banning books was bad 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s so hard for leftists to be consistent.”

A tweet read, “This is absolutely hilarious.”

Another tweet said, “Yeahhhh… I’m sure JK is worried about losing that income 🙄🙄🙄🙄.”
