'Can play Jesus': Internet suggests roles as Martin Scorsese floats Daniel Day-Lewis return 'for one more'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Maybe there’s time for another Daniel Day-Lewis appearance in a Martin Scorsese film, at least that is what the veteran director has said.
The three-times Oscar-winning retired British actor recently appeared at the National Board of Review award ceremony to present the Best Director accolade to Scorsese for his work on ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.
Martin Scorsese hints at bringing Daniel Day-Lewis back from retirement
Day-Lewis, 66, retired from acting in 2017 after his critically acclaimed performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Phantom Thread'.
On Thursday, January 11, Day-Lewis made one of the rare appearances of his post-retirement days to present the award to Martin Scorsese.
The 81-year-old director, while accepting the award from Day-Lewis, said that working with the British actor has been "one of the greatest experiences of my life."
To the surprise of the audience, Scorsese then suggested, "Maybe there's time for one more," per Entertainment Weekly.
The audience accepted the proposal with a collective gasp and cheered at the prospect of Day-Lewis’s coming back from retirement to star in a Scorsese film.
The retired actor, nevertheless, did not comment on the proposal and just smiled and held out his hands.
Scorsese and Day-Lewis have collaborated on two projects as of now. They collaborated first in the 1993's ‘The Age of Innocence’, which Day-Lewis called "one of the greatest joys and unexpected privileges of my life."
Later, they collaborated in 2022's ‘Gangs of New York’. If Scorsese can indeed make the star break his retirement vows and coerce him into another movie, that would make the duo’s third outing together.
While handing out the award, Day-Lewis gushed about his relationship with Scorsese, and said, “I was a teenager when I discovered Martin’s work.”
While introducing, he further added. “With a light of his own making, he illuminated unknown worlds that pulsed with a dangerous, irresistible energy — worlds that were mysterious to me and utterly enthralling.”
“He illuminated the vast, beautiful landscape of what is possible in film, and he clarified for me what it is that one must ask of one's self to work in faith,” continued Day-Lewis.
'Maybe he can just play Jesus'
Fans were ecstatic at the news of Day-Lewis' return with several of them even suggesting the perfect role for the actor to make a come back.
One of the fans said on Reddit, "Bill the Butcher is my favorite Scorsese “character” and he struck gold having Daniel Day Lewis portray him."
Someone else quipped, "He has 3 Oscar’s and you can make the case he should have more which is crazy."
Another fan added, "Make a film about coming out of retirement. He likes that method stuff."
"Oh man, I've only just recently seen the light of Mr Day-Lewis and I would love this," said another excited fan.
Another fan said, "Do it and cast him in two roles so can win 2 Oscars at the same ceremony."
"Would have to be as good a role as he had for him before which is probably the toughest part. I think DDL would consider a part that called to him enough. Age of Innocence is almost never discussed on any of the movie/tv subs when I see Scorsese talk and it’s too bad. Michelle Pfeiffer was excellent also," remarked another fan.
Another fan wondered, "Is there a good role for him in The Wager? Maybe he can just play Jesus."
Another fan added, "I’d be really interested to see what could actually get him out of retirement. I’d like to see him in a Scorsese movie out of any director out there but I can imagine it would have to be some sort of intense character study."
