“Whether she is conscious of it or not, Ms. Swift signals to queer people — in the language we use to communicate with one another — that she has some affinity for queer identity," writes Anna Marks.https://t.co/WhqhXqq5AG
Taylor Swift's associates blast New York Times article as 'invasive' and 'untrue'
A recent opinion piece in The New York Times penned by writer Anna Marks has ignited a firestorm within Swift's inner circle and fanbase. The article, probing into Swift's sexuality and whether she might be secretly queer, has drawn fierce criticism, labeling it as 'sexist' and raising questions about its fairness compared to how male artists' sexualities are handled.
Sources close to Swift blasted the article as "invasive" and questioned The Times for allowing it to be published. “There seems to be no boundary some journalists won’t cross when writing about Taylor, regardless of how invasive, untrue, and inappropriate it is — all under the protective veil of an 'opinion piece,'" one insider told CNN.
The insider argued Swift has faced scrutiny that would not apply to male artists, stating the piece "wouldn’t have been allowed to be written about Shawn Mendes or any male artist whose sexuality has been questioned by fans." However, the author of the Times article had previously published a similar speculation piece about Harry Styles back in 2022.
Anna Marks dissects perceived 'Easter eggs' in Swift's artistry that may signal queer identity
Marks' piece, titled 'Look What We Made Taylor Swift Do,' delves into Swift's artistry, scrutinizing lyrics and symbolic gestures that hint at a Sapphic narrative. She dissects perceived 'Easter eggs' in Swift's lyrics and videos that may signal queer identity.
She points to Swift's use of bisexual pride flag colors, name-dropping of lesbian historical figures in performances, and songs about being trapped in 'glass closets'. Marks writes that when viewed collectively alongside her celebrity narrative, these details “suggest to queer people that she is one of us.”
She argues Swift has dropped such "hairpins" long before embracing LGBTQ advocacy was mainstream. In 2019, Swift told Vogue magazine she speaks out for gay rights because "rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male."
She added at the time: "I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of."
