According to his obituary, Marshall Rose "spent his life in New York." Born in Brighton Beach in 1937, he obtained an economics degree from City College and a law degree from New York University.
His professional achievements included managing the development of Frank Gehry's IAC building, overseeing Madison Square Garden's renovation, and supporting the establishment of three city charter schools.
Marshall’s most notable achievement was his three-decade-long service on the New York Public Library’s board, including two terms as chairman, during which he led the establishment of the Science, Industry, and Business Library.
"Marshall's proudest contribution was his 30-year tenure on the board of the New York Public Library," the statement added. "In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to the New York Public Library, an institution he loved so dearly. Any gifts given in his honor (nypl.org/memorial) will be earmarked for adult literacy programs at branches across the five boroughs."
Bergen was married to film director Louis Malle from 1980 until his death from cancer in 1995 at the age of 63. According to Architectural Digest, the Oscar nominee and Rose lived together in an East Hampton home originally built for Malle and his first wife, Jill, until 2020.
During a 2015 interview with her 'Miss Congeniality' co-star Sandra Bullock, Bergen emphasized that her marriage took priority over her career. “I’m not that ambitious,” she shared at the time. "I’m always grateful when I get offered something that engages me, it’s for the right amount of time, and I don’t have to leave my husband for more than a week or two. That’s really all I ask."
The obituary also highlighted Rose's role as a devoted "dogfather" to his cherished goldendoodle, Jerry adding, "His family carries on his legacy of fierce compassion, stubborn persistence, and commitment to cheering on the Knicks. His wisdom, strength, and generosity of spirit will be remembered by the countless people whose lives he touched."
Rose is survived by his wife, Candice, his children, Wendi and Andrew, his stepdaughter, Chloe and his grandchildren, Alexander, Clio, Ell, Milo, Arthur, and Alice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Jean, his brother, Robert, and his late wife, Jill.
