Charlamagne Tha God dismisses Drake’s Michael Jackson record: ‘I say numbers lie’

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Radio host Charlamagne Tha God has questioned the significance of record-breaking numbers in today’s music landscape as rapper Drake’s latest Billboard achievement places him alongside Michael Jackson in chart history.

While acknowledging Drake Graham’s dominance and commercial consistency, Charlamagne’s remarks have reignited discussions around cultural impact, the influence of streaming platforms, and how the modern music industry defines success.

Charlamagne Tha God questions Drake’s Billboard record impact

Charlamagne responded to comparisons between Drake and Michael Jackson during a discussion on his show, saying, “Let's give the Drake fan pages something to clip. Hey, Drake Clippers, you paying attention? This is why I say numbers lie."

He continued by arguing that Drake Graham’s success does not carry the same cultural weight as Michael Jackson’s music, saying, “But we know that a lot of the music that Drake makes does not have the cultural impact of an off-the-wall thriller.”

At the same time, he acknowledged Drake Graham’s commercial reach, saying, “Because does Drake have the numbers? Yes. Does Drake have music that will stand the test of time? Yes.”

He also pointed to the difference in global record sales between the two artists, noting Michael Jackson’s continued dominance decades after his peak. Responding to that, Charlamagne said, “But he did break the singles record. Drake has made a lot of fast food, a lot of here todays, gone tomorrows. Meanwhile, it's 2026 and Michael Jackson is still selling almost 3 million albums a year.”

He further added, “His biopic has made almost 800 million dollars at the box office. There is levels and layers to who Michael Jackson is. Drake will break the records, but it's not the same.”

He stated, “He did put on the glove and throw up the white power symbol. Drake telling 'Janis to STFU' is not the same as Michael asking Billie Jean, is she okay? It's just not the same, guys.” The host later congratulated Drake Graham, adding, "He also posted 42 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.”

Charlamagne Tha God and Drake Graham’s long-running feud amid streaming records

In 2021, after Drake Graham occupied the top three positions on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, Charlamagne Tha God jokingly suggested that he “cheated,” while still admitting that Drake remained “the guy” when it came to streaming and radio performance.

He also acknowledged that Drake Graham’s chart success answered previous doubts about whether the “Drake era” was still active. The radio host had earlier argued in late 2020 that his era of dominance might have ended, claiming audiences were experiencing fatigue with Drake Graham’s sound.

Their complicated relationship has unfolded publicly for more than a decade. Charlamagne criticized several Drake Graham releases over the years, including 'Toosie Slide' and the album 'Honestly, Nevermind,' which he described as “elevator music.” 

Drake Graham later responded publicly on Instagram after criticism surrounding the single 'Slime You Out,' calling Charlamagne Tha God an “Off-brand Morris Chestnut.” Despite the repeated tension, Charlamagne later joked that he was secretly part of Drake Graham’s album rollout strategy because his criticism always generated additional attention for his projects.

He also officially tied Michael Jackson’s Billboard Hot 100 record in October 2023 after 'First Person Shooter' with rapper J. Cole debuted at Number 1. The song became his 13th chart-topping single, matching Jackson’s total for the most No. 1 songs by a solo male artist.

Billboard data also showed Drake Graham ranking fourth overall behind The Beatles, Mariah Carey, and Rihanna. The achievement also marked J. Cole’s first career No. 1 single as well.
