Chris Martin explains Coldplay's 'Viva la Vida' plans as band nears end in studio
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin confirmed in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that the band will retire after the release of its 12th studio album, per NBC News.
Martin told Lowe, "We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we're trying to improve."
Chris Martin reveals Coldplay will retire after 12 albums
Martin added during the interview that the 12-album limit didn’t come out of nowhere but was rather inspired by some of the band’s biggest influences.
The frontman explained, "There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles' albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes."
Another reason for the band, putting this limit on itself, is because Martin wants his bandmates to be able to say 'Viva la vida'.
"To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves," Martin added.
Martin says he would still make music after band's retirement
Even though the band will retire after the 12th project, it will not end their collaboration definitively. Martin explained that since he loves making new music, he would likely continue doing so even after the band retires. That could include side projects with his bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, per the outlet.
Coldplay is all set to release its 10th album 'Moon Music' on Friday, October 4, and the band will be left with just two more albums before they call it quits.
The band grossed more than $1 billion from the European leg of their 'Music of the Spheres' tour, which started in March 2022. They will continue their touring with gigs in Australia and New Zealand in late November and in 2025, they will perform in Asia along with summer headlining shows in the UK.
