WASHINGTON, DC: Democrat Sen Chris Murphy refused to apologise on Tuesday, April 21, after coming under fire for a social media post that critics said appeared to celebrate Iranian-linked ships slipping past President Donald Trump’s blockade.

Instead of retracting the remark, Murphy said it was sarcasm, blamed the reaction on social media culture and insisted his real position has always been opposition to Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict.

Chris Murphy doubles down, says critics missed the joke

Speaking with Fox News reporter after the backlash erupted, Murphy made clear he had no intention of issuing an apology or walking back the controversial post.

Rather than expressing regret, the Connecticut Democrat suggested the online reaction proved sarcasm no longer translates on modern platforms.

“Twitter's become kind of a cesspool. I probably should give up on sarcasm on Twitter.”

Murphy argued that anyone who has followed his public statements on the war with Iran should understand where he stands.

According to the senator, he has consistently criticised Trump’s strategy in the region and has called for a quick end to the confrontation.

“Obviously, anybody that's seen anything that I have said about Trump's war knows that I think it's bungled, mismanaged and you should end it as quickly as possible. But sarcasm is not something, I guess, that's allowed on Twitter any longer.”

When the reporter asked whether he regretted the message, planned to delete it, or wanted to clarify further, Murphy again declined to apologise.

“I mean, I guess I just have to be more careful about sarcasm on Twitter.”

Murphy has emerged as one of the louder Democratic voices attacking Trump’s recent foreign policy moves, particularly over the administration’s military posture toward Iran and its naval pressure campaign around the Strait of Hormuz.

Chris Murphy faces calls to resign

The controversy began when Murphy replied “Awesome” to a report claiming that 26 vessels linked to Iran’s so-called shadow fleet had bypassed the US blockade.

The ships were reportedly tied to networks used to move sanctioned Iranian trade, including oil shipments, despite Washington’s efforts to tighten enforcement.

Because the comment came during an active standoff involving the United States and Iran, critics quickly accused Murphy of cheering against his own country.

Conservative voices on social media branded the post anti-American, while others questioned why a sitting senator would celebrate reports suggesting US pressure tactics had failed.

The report Murphy reacted to cited maritime intelligence indicating that tanker traffic connected to Iranian commerce had continued even after the blockade was announced.
