Richard Gere sells Connecticut house for $10.8M as he plans to move to Spain with family
NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT: Richard Gere sold his Connecticut residence for $10.75 million and disclosed his intention to move to Spain.
The 1999 Sexiest Man Alive, at the age of 75, purchased a house in New Canaan in 2022 for $10.8 million, which is $50,000 more than the selling price, from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, as reported by the New Canaan Advertiser.
Richard Gere and wife Alejandra Silva lived in 1938 estate for two years before deciding to relocate
The singer-songwriter duo also experienced a considerable loss on the sale, having purchased the property for $16.5 million 17 years prior, according to the report.
Gere resided in the residence with his wife, Alejandra Silva, for two years, and at one time, it was reported that he intended to convert the estate into a farm. The property, dating back to 1938, features six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, a swimming pool, several gardens, and a guest cottage with three bedrooms.
The estate spans 32 acres and boasts period details throughout, as noted in a prior listing by Sotheby's. The actor has recently expressed his desire to relocate overseas.
Since their marriage in 2018, Gere and Silva have resided in the United States.
Why did Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva decide to relocate?
In an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Richard Gere expressed a desire to spend more time in Spain, his wife's homeland, to enable her to be nearer to her family.
"For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture," he spoke of Silva, 41, "She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers."
Madrid will be a "great adventure," Gere stated, for himself, Silva, and their two children, Alexander, aged 5, and James, aged 4, who will be relocating with them.
Gere is also the father to 24-year-old Homer, his son with his second wife Carey Lowell. Similarly, Silva has a son, Albert, aged 11, from her previous marriage to Govind Friedland.
“I love Spain and the ability of the Spanish people to live transmitting joy and happiness,” Gere said.
During his interview with Vanity Fair, Gere mentioned that he owns a house "in the countryside near New York," indicating that he will maintain a presence in the United States.
Internet reacts to Richard Gere's choice to move to Spain
As soon as Richard Gere's fans learned of his decision to relocate to Spain, they began sharing their reactions on Facebook. A user appreciated his decision, "best decision ever! Good luck to him!"
Another commented, "That’s being a good husband. I imagine his parents have passed and hers haven’t. Years they’ll all appreciate."
A third said, "He made a smart move!"
"Whatever makes him happy, u only live once," said a fan.
Conversely, some have criticized Gere for allegedly fleeing the country. One said, "What a shame he will be so far away from his son, Homer. Isn't his son more important than his in-laws? Bring the in-laws here."
"He’s leaving the US because he’s on Diddy’s list. Also, did you forget about the hamster incident?" asked a person.
Another added, "He can run but he can’t hide. Everyone knows what list he on.."
