Christina Milian reveals why she left Hollywood for a new life in Paris with her family
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Christina Milian, recently opened up about leaving Hollywood behind and relocating to Paris.
The 'Dip It Low' singer, along with her husband, Matt Pokora, their two sons, Isaiah, four, and Kenna, three, as well as her 14-year-old daughter, Violet, from her previous marriage to music producer The-Dream, made the permanent move to France last year.
Christina Milian wanted her children to grow up with a multicultural perspective
In a candid conversation on 'The Jennifer Hudson Show' on Tuesday, November 5, Christina Milian explained that they had been dividing their time between the US and France for the last few years.
She shared, "For the last three or four years, we were commuting back and forth every six months. And then we decided to commit to it last year because our kids were gonna go to school."
The singer said the decision was motivated by her desire for her children to experience French culture. "What’s better than an opportunity like that?" she remarked. It was important for the couple to give their children the experience of growing up with a multicultural perspective, and living in France provided that opportunity.
Christina Milian embraces Paris life despite language barrier
While Christina Milian is thrilled about the change, she admitted the transition hasn’t been without its challenges. Although she speaks both English and Spanish, she has yet to learn French fluently.
Milian humorously shared that at first, she didn’t let the language barrier bother her. "I’d be at restaurants and having dinner with people, everyone is speaking French... I love to eat, so I would just let everybody talk, I’m just gonna eat away," recalled the 'Falling Inn Love' actress.
However, things took a turn during a dinner date with her husband, who is fluent in French.
Milian shared how Pokora spent nearly two hours chatting with a restaurant host in French, and it was then that she realized she could no longer make excuses.
"It was a lesson learned 'cause I was in France. And I said, ‘You know what? This is actually a problem for me. It’s time to stop making excuses and challenge myself to learn another language," said the mother of three.
Despite the challenge, Milian took the situation in stride, calling her current language level "Franglish."
Christina Milian says Paris has been a positive change for her family
For Christina Milian, the move to Paris hasn’t just been a physical relocation—it’s a decision deeply rooted in her love for the city and the fresh start it offers her family.
The 43-year-old remarked, "I love it there. It’s gorgeous."
The city holds a special place in her heart because it’s where she met Pokora in the summer of 2017. Milian couldn’t help but agree with Hudson when she said that their love story "was meant to be."
They tied the knot in December 2020 while they were expecting their second child together.
Though the transition to a new life in Paris presents its share of challenges, Milian has embraced the adventure and is looking forward to what lies ahead for her and her family.
"It’s a positive change for our family," said the 'Love Don't Cost a Thing' star, reflecting on the overall experience.
