WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Donald Trump of steering the United States toward another unwanted war in the Middle East as tensions with Iran intensify.

Schumer said Americans are still living with the human and financial toll of past conflicts and questioned why the administration appears ready to escalate further despite widespread public fatigue with long overseas wars.

Schumer accuses Trump of risking another Middle East war

Addressing the ongoing US-Iran conflict, Schumer pointed to the legacy of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Americans spent the last two decades fighting and dying in the Middle East. Parents watched their kids shipped off to foreign lands. So many lives lost, so many billions wasted. So much suffering and anguish that scarred an entire generation,” Schumer said.

He then directly challenged the president’s approach. “Why is Donald Trump hellbent on making history repeat itself? Why is he plunging America headfirst into a war that Americans do not want and which he cannot even explain?!”

Schumer warned that the administration’s posture toward Iran could pull the US into another prolonged conflict similar to those that followed the September 11 attacks.

Schumer criticizes Hegseth over Iran escalation messaging

In an official statement, Schumer also took aim at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing the administration of reckless escalation and unclear public messaging.

“The last thing the American people want or need is another war in the Middle East. But if you listened to Secretary Pete Hegseth’s press conference this morning, one thing is crystal clear: America is at war. In his own words, Hegseth said, ‘we are just getting started,’” Schumer said”

He continued, “You hear that America? Pete Hegseth says another war in the Middle East is just getting started. He suggests more of our sons and daughters will be shipped off to fight in a foreign land. More of our taxpayer dollars will be wasted abroad instead of invested at home.”

Schumer further questioned whether the administration had a defined strategy, citing Hegseth’s remarks that the US was “accelerating, not decelerating,” and that “more bombers and more fighters are arriving just today.”

“What is Hegseth even talking about? Are we putting boots on the ground? Are we depleting our strategic munitions reserves? Is there a timeline or limit to our engagement in Iran? We have no clue — because Hegseth is more interested in soundbites than explanations,” Schumer said.

Schumer urged senators to support a bipartisan War Powers Resolution aimed at halting further military action in Iran without explicit congressional authorization. He introduced the measure alongside Sens Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff and Rand Paul.

The resolution seeks to reassert Congress’ constitutional authority over decisions that could place US troops in sustained combat as tensions with Iran continue to rise.
