Coco Gauff upset after controversial umpire's call at Olympics tennis match, Internet calls it 'unfair'
PARIS, FRANCE: Coco Gauff was cruising against Donna Vekic in her third-round match at the Paris Olympics.
However, the match took a dramatic turn at Roland Garros, resulting in a surprising defeat for the tennis star.
Coco Gauff's first-set loss and dramatic second-set at Paris Olympics tennis match
Coco Gauff was a point away from securing the first set on the prestigious Court Philippe-Cartier. Despite her strong start, she watched the contest slip away, ultimately succumbing to a 7-6(7) 6-2 upset.
The tightly contested first set foreshadowed the intense battle that was to follow.
During the second set, Gauff was reduced to tears during a heated exchange with chair umpire Jaume Campistol over a controversial line call, according to CNN.
Initially deemed out, the call on Gauff's baseline was overruled by Campistol, awarding Vekic a crucial break point.
The American tennis player then demanded a replay of the point, given the call was made just before Gauff hit the ball.
The debate with the supervisor, which paused the play, lasted five minutes and left Gauff in tears. When the play eventually resumed, the crowd expressed discontent with boos and jeers.
Coco Gauff says VRs should be installed at tennis tournaments to review the umpire's decision
Speaking to reporters, Coco Gauff said, “There’s been multiple times this year where that happened to me, where I feel like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court."
“And I feel like in tennis, we should have a VR [video review] system because these points are big deals. Usually, afterward, they apologize, so it’s kind of frustrating when the sorry doesn’t help you once the match is over," she added.
Gauff then created three break points in the following game. However, Vekic shut down the opening and saved the last point with an inch-perfect lob before taking a lead of 4-2 in the second set.
From that point on, the match was in the Croatian player's control. Appreciating Vekic's performance, Gauff said, “Donna played well."
“She’s been playing well throughout Wimbledon ‘til now, so I knew it would be a tough match. I think I had a lot of chances in the first, and I felt like if I could clinch that set, it might have helped me in the momentum of the second," she added.

"It's just absolute robbery. Umpire just robbed the point from Coco on her break point on serve when she is 30-40. Ball was called out before she hit the ball. Its unfair. Change the rules #Olympics" a user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote.

"They should have replayed the point. Simple solution to a missed call. Unfortunate situation on such a huge point in the match," a user remarked.

"Unfair…. again, at a crucial break point too. Also, the fact that umpires have to get out of their chairs to look at marks in the clay to rule on some points is ridiculous," someone commented.
