WASHINGTON, DC: In the wake of Iran's recent missile and drone attack on Israel, former national security advisor John Bolton has aimed at both former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden for their handling of the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The attack, which saw over 300 projectiles launched towards Israel, has reignited fears of a wider conflict in the region, with Israel currently engaged in a war against Hamas in Gaza.

Trump's assessment and Bolton's criticism

Trump, speaking at a campaign rally over the weekend, suggested that Iran's aggression towards Israel was a result of perceived weakness on the part of the United States, implying that such actions would not have occurred under his administration.

However, Bolton, a vocal critic of Trump since leaving his administration, dismissed the former president's assessment as delusional, Politico reported.

"I just think Trump is delusional on this point," Bolton stated in an interview with CNN's 'State of the Union.' “It’s a point that nobody can refute or confirm one way or the other. He doesn’t have any idea what to do in the Middle East in this situation. Remember when he threatened fire and fury against North Korea? Within a year he had fallen in love with Kim Jong Un. So he’s not qualified to be president.”

Bolton also expressed dissatisfaction with Biden's approach to the ongoing tensions, particularly regarding reports that the administration has urged Israel to exercise restraint in its response to Iran's aggression.

“If Joe Biden, as some press reports have it, is urging the Israelis not to retaliate at all, he is an embarrassment to the United States,” Bolton said. “This is an American interest to make sure that Iran, which is the principal threat to international peace and security in the region, is at a minimum put in its place to spare Israel, to spare the Gulf Arabs, to spare us from the threat that they pose.”

"If Iran doesn’t feel the pain, I think it’s only going to get worse for Israel," Bolton added, advocating for a more assertive approach towards Tehran.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have vowed to retaliate against Iran for the attack, with war cabinet member Benny Gantz stating that Israel will exact a price from Iran at a time of its choosing.

“This event is not over,” Gantz said. “The strategic alliance and the regional cooperation system that we built and stood its significant test need to be strengthened precisely now.”

Social media reactions

However, Bolton's criticism of Trump's handling of the situation has drawn backlash on social media, with some users questioning his credibility and accusing him of warmongering.

"Coming from a madman like Bolton, he has no right to talk about 'delusional,'" one posted on X.

"John Bolton of weapons of mass destruction fame LMFAO," another reacted.

"If anyone isn’t qualified to keep peace it’s John Bolton," a comment read.

"Trump is right. None of this would be happening if he were in office. Democrats want war and upheaval to advance their globalist agenda. Bolton is a warmonger," someone else offered.

"The more John Bolton runs his mouth, the more delusional and comical he sounds. Let's see Bolton do stand-up comedy acts for HBO in front of a live audience and I bet his trump jokes fall flat with the audience, and then Greg Gutfeld and Tyrus have fun with the dude," another quipped.
